Shar Pei

William Harris, I am unsure about reincluding the Shar Pei in this navbox, the FCI group dogs into categories for the purposes of dog shows, I think the genetic (and realistically historical) evidence is far more compelling, there is little evidence of any mastiffs (as opposed to livestock guardians) in China or surrounds. I always get concerned when Wikipedia editors start quoting Ostrander/Parker, because these 2 were not looking at inheritance in their genetic relationships. As Larson 2014 pointed out, they were looking at the degree of genetic divergence from the other breeds, not ancestral lineage. All we can say from their work (today in 2020) is that the Shar Pei has the same degree of genetic divergence as the Spitz breeds. Why? Possibly due to both their geographic isolation from the Victorian breeds that were spread across the globe.

We have an issue - how do we intend on classifying our dogs for our templates, are we going with the FCI breed standard or by some other method? William Harristalk 09:30, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Have looked up a couple of books, Desmond Morris states they are most closely related to the Chow Chow^[1] whilst Bonnie Wilcox & Chris Walkowicz state it is a spitz (“northern”) breed descended from chow-type dogs.^[2] I won’t pretend to understand the motivations of the FCI, but in this instance, which is a little exceptional, I think they are way out. And just for interest, the Shar-pei shares some DNA with........the Boxer! There has been gene flow from one into the other, or gene flow between both (Parker 2017). William Harristalk 11:32, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing the Template

Can someone please fix the Template so that it will show itself? I added the extinct mastiff breeds to it so it'd be like the other dog templates and I don't know why it won't act normally. Any help here is greatly appreciated. Thanks!Mcfoureyes (talk) 21:53, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Done I fixed it earlier today here and here, but just now noticed this post. The template does not like spaces in those parameters. I'm not familiar with the conventions here on this subject, and I have almost no knowledge of the topic in general. So while I fixed the markup, I also asked if a regular could take a look at the end product. As far as I'm concerned though, it looks fine. --DB1729 (talk) 01:56, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
