Infobox update

Extended content

@MSGJ, Figureskatingfan, and Editor120918756: According to the latest discussion on the figure skating project page, the following three changes should be made to this template:

  1. Former coach → Final coach
  2. Remove current and former choreographer altogether
  3. World standing → Peak world standing
  4. Remove season's bests altogether

Note: I also suggest to merge the (former) training locations into the skating club parameter, using the form "club, location" for each entry in the list.

I am not authorized to edit this template, but I volunteer to update the documentation page. Henni147 (talk) 11:35, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If possible, could you make your required changes to Template:Infobox figure skater/sandbox? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:37, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I can do that. Thank you very much for the quick reply! Henni147 (talk) 11:40, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think @Figureskatingfan gave me the permission, just haven't had the time to go about it yet.
I'm also curious, what will happen to the pre-existing infoboxes? I can update the pages I do it on quickly, but how do we inform the others quickly? Editor120918756 (talk) 12:17, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Henni147 Also, we didn't vote to remove season's bests from infobox. I got outvoted on it, and accepted that the consensus was to retain it.
These are the updates to infobox:
  • Former coach removed, only current/final coach retained (I don't think we need two slots for this, we can have one slot for "Coach", and mention in the documentation that retired skaters need to only have their final coach mentioned here)
  • Remove choreographers, only mention outside the Programs section if the article's completion demands it.
  • WS -> Peak WS along with provision for season(s) when it happened (current proposal is to never mention it elsewhere, which is standing for a week)
And I agree with your suggestion about the training club. Editor120918756 (talk) 12:28, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Editor120918756: Thanks for your response.
  • Don't worry about the infobox update. We can leave the existing parameters for the time being (with exception of the choreographers, which will be no longer displayed), so that editors have the time to update the infoboxes one by one.
  • I am fine with merging the coaches. That makes sense.
  • RE season's bests: I am really baffled about that decision. Why are SB more important than WS that justifies their full listing? I am fine with adding peak SB, but no way the full list. We should definitely re-discuss that point again. Update: Just checked the project talk page, but I couldn't find any SB discussion there at all. Sure that we have checked that point already? Henni147 (talk) 12:56, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Henni147 I mixed up PB and SB, sorry about that.
However, where are we currently displaying SBs for anyone in infobox? At least on Jin Boyang, Shoma Uno we're not. Are you talking about the progression of SBs like on Nathan Chen? If so, I 100% agree to remove it altogether, and not even mention the peak. I don't think it matters at all. Editor120918756 (talk) 13:11, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Editor120918756: Okay, I'm relieved. Then let's skip that one altogether. Henni147 (talk) 13:49, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@MSGJ: Okay, I updated the sandbox now in accordance with the results of the latest discussion. You can find a sample of the full infobox there as it should look like. To sum it up:

  1. The infobox has been divided into a personal info and skating career section, with the country parameter being placed at the top of the latter.
  2. Two new parameters "discipline" and "worldstanding" have been added, while both choreographer parameters got removed.
  3. Other obsolete parameters have been labelled as such in the markup code. Those shall stay until all skater infoboxes have been updated to avoid display errors or remove important information.
  4. An additional module slot has been included before the medal lists for skaters who need multiple tables for personal best scores (changing discipline, judging system etc.) Here is a shortened example on the right.
  5. The line-height for the labels has been reduced to 1.2 to make them less bulky and to shorten the length of the infobox.

Yeah, that should be it. I hope, it's fine like this. I will adjust the documentation page, when all changes have been made to the template. Henni147 (talk) 20:41, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Okay good job.  Done. Why don't you just remove the obsolete ones? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:01, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MSGJ: Currently, the infoboxes for retired skaters only use the obsolete former parameters. If we remove them now, then those infobox sections will be almost empty, which is odd. Also, there are multiple inline citations used in the current lists of world standings and season's best rankings. If we remove the parameters now, then the reference sections will be filled with red error messages. So I thought, it's better to keep them for now.
Note: There seems to be a display error with the module slots. Maybe the second module-parameter has to be changed to "module2"? I made another update to the sandbox, which works fine. It also resolves the display issues with the headers "Personal information" and "Figure skating career".
And I just noticed that a parameter for the new rhythm dance segment in ice dance is missing. So I added that one, too. Thank you very much for your help! Henni147 (talk) 06:43, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Do you need module2, because it wasn't supported before. Also the misc parameter would display twice with the current code. Finally, why have you got all that code after the {{Documentation}} template? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:16, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MSGJ: Sorry, I made a test if the sandbox template works, and forgot to remove the table at the bottom (fixed that now). About the module issue: I checked various articles, and the module2 parameter wasn't really used anywhere, so I think it's okay to remove it.
Update: The sandbox has been updated in accordance with the latest consensus on WP Figure, and should have no more issues. Henni147 (talk) 13:29, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Marriage?

I think I only started looking into this template when I found no space to indicate Michelle Kwan's marriage (later dissolved) to Clay Pell — since the templates for other individual athletes often do include such an optional parameter. Should this be added or restored? —— Shakescene (talk) 02:32, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Shakescene: There was a spouse parameter until now, but it was decided by majority vote to remove it from the template, since it's rare that skaters get married to encyclopedically notable people, and it just further blows up the infobox in length. Spouses should be mentioned in the prose part of the article in the section "private life", supported by reliable secondary sources. Henni147 (talk) 07:28, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 2 October 2023

Description of suggested change: The latest community discussions and votings (archived here) resulted in the following list of requested changes, including a sample table with all desired parameters. The sandbox has already been adjusted and checked with two testcases for functionality.

Differences: Please check the differences between the current template and sandbox page by copying the sandbox markup code into the template editor. Multiple obsolete parameters have been removed, new ones added, orders flipped, numeration changed etc.

Note: The infoboxes will require major manual revamps one by one. The task will be pinned on top of the figure skating project page, so that all members are informed. Henni147 (talk) 11:45, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done This looks like a big change, so don't be surprised if there are a few further changes that need to be made. Check existing articles to ensure that they display the way that you want them to. If you find an infobox that does not work right, copy it into a new section on the testcases page and post a note here.
It looks like there will be a lot of work to do at Category:Pages using infobox figure skater with unknown parameters. There is a bot that can help, as long as there is clear consensus to remove some or all unsupported parameters. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:56, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonesey95: Thank you very much! Yes, it's going to be a lot of work. However, this revamp was long overdue anyways because many infoboxes no longer meet various MOS guidelines. So it made sense to reformat the infobox template first. Henni147 (talk) 15:34, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Will the articles that already use the template be automatically populated with the new parameters? I understand that we will have to manually input the information into those parameters, but should we expect to see them available? Bgsu98 (Talk) 15:49, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bgsu98: Only the existing parameters are currently displayed.
  • The following new parameters must be added manually:
    • discipline
    • years_competitive
    • years_professional
    • current_WS
    • highest_WS
  • The content of all "former" templates must be moved manually in accordance with this overview.
I am updating the documentation page now, where the latest infobox standards are explained in detail. Henni147 (talk) 16:31, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 12 October 2023

Description of suggested change: Based on the latest decisions on WikiProject Figure Skating, the following template changes have been requested:

  • The current_WS parameter shall be removed.
ISU world standings permanently change during a season, so it's troublesome to keep them updated.
  • All parameters for ISU personal best scores shall be removed.
PB scores will now be added with the new {{Figure skating personal bests}} table template in the statistics section of the articles to unburden the infobox.
  • The parameter medalrecord shall be added with the header "Medal record".
It serves as a slot for the new {{Figure skating infobox medals}} template. Note: The old medal parameters shall be kept as an alternative.

The sandbox has been adjusted already and the new markup code checked for functionality with two testcases. Thank you very much in advance! Henni147 (talk) 10:59, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
