Red links

@Kpalion:, since when is that a rule? There are heaps of templates (e.g. Template:Farmer-surname) with red links in them.. --Turaids (talk) 20:38, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a hard-and-fast rule, but it is good practice to avoid red links to navboxes. Per the Red link guideline, "red links may be used on navigation templates with links to existing articles, but they cannot be excessive. Editors who add excessive red links to navboxes are expected to actively work on building those articles, or they may be removed from the template." The essay Write the article first explains further why adding red links to navboxes is generally not a good idea: "creating red links in purely navigational features of Wikipedia, like navigation templates (...), directly interferes with the actual function of these features, which is to help readers navigate the already existing Wikipedia resources relevant to the topic." — Kpalion(talk) 21:58, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
