Scope

This template seems a bit far fetched to me. Yes, in the grand scheme of things, all history is interconnected, but are all these past events really relevant for the Iraq War that happened mostly in 2000s? I'd like to discuss this, not very strong opinionated about this currently. PhotographyEdits (talk) 22:38, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@PhotographyEdits As the creator of this template, I would say yeah, they are, more or less. I formatted this in the style of Template:Events leading to World War I, but I admit more refinement wouldn't be a bad idea. Which links are you most skeptical of? @PhotographyEdits Well, short version:

14 July Revolution – overthrew the Iraqi monarchy and established a republic
Iraqi–Kurdish conflict – perennial conflict that led to both the 1991 uprisings and Iraqi Kurdistan's support for the 2003 invasion
17 July Revolution – Ba'ath Party comes to power in Iraq
Iranian Revolution – crucial background event for the Iran–Iraq War
1979 Ba'ath Party Purge – Saddam purges the party and consolidates power
Iran–Iraq War – the US sends weapons, including chemical weapons, to Iraq to use against Iran (a lot of rhetoric about WMDs relates to this war)
United States support for Iraq during the Iran–Iraq War ("Iraqgate") – self-explanatory, plus allegations that the US gave billions of dollars to Iraq during the war (which were likely used to purchase weapons)
