What is required to be on this list? All artists included in this list are required to have claimed sales figures of at least 75 million records. Such figures should be supported by highly reliable sources, preferably from news organizations. The sources generally use the term "records", which includes singles, albums and videos. What is the purpose of having certified sales? Certified sales are total independently certified figures that provide objective data to the list. However, it should be taken into account that certification systems do not exist in all markets. Additionally, the dates of establishment of the existing certification systems are different, differing up to several decades between them. How streaming may affect the certified sales Note that the certified sales of the newer artists may sometimes be higher than their listed claimed figures. That is because Recording Industry Association of America and almost all other certifying bodies count streaming towards Gold and Platinum thresholds required for Digital Single Award certification. For this reason, some singles and even albums get over certified by hundreds of thousands of units. The over certified figures, however, often times are in millions of units for RIAA certifications. |
