West Fifth Street Bridge at Shoal Creek

  • ... that the West Fifth Street Bridge was built to help Austin become the City Beautiful? Source: "With the backing of former Mayor A.P. Woodridge and the Chamber of Commerce, city leaders passed an ordinance in 1926 to create a city plan commission. Their goal was for 'Austin, the Friendly City [to] become the City Beautiful.'" • New enough and long enough. Multiple citations in every paragraph, within other guidelines, no close paraphrasing suspected. I can't accept the hook because it is too misleading. The primary reason the bridge was built was to relieve vehicle congestion. The assertion in the hook is too strong; the only citation in the article about "City Beautiful" is to a 1928 newspaper article - not the NRHP form as stated here. The movement was a factor in the bridge's design, and the hook could say that or something else, perhaps that the bridge imitates an arch bridge even though it is not.
  • Needs new hook. MB 23:39, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
The NRHP nomination form contains the relevant quotation from the newspaper article (Section 8, Page 10); I linked it for your sake for verifiability. The sources say that the bridge was built as part of implementing the 1928 City Plan, and that one goal of the plan was to make Austin into a "City Beautiful", and that this is why the bridge was so ornately (and expensively) designed. My proposed hook doesn't say that that was the only reason the bridge was built, and the source pretty explicitly supports my claim: "The nominated bridge is a physical manifestation of City Beautiful standards that were promoted in the 1928 City Plan and the resulting bond improvement program that financed its construction" (Section 8, Page 14). Still, if you don't like that, how about
  • ALT1: ... that the West Fifth Street Bridge is a cantilever bridge designed to look like an arch bridge? Source: "The West Fifth Street Bridge at Shoal Creek is a cantilever reinforced concrete girder bridge designed to mimic an arch bridge. This method of construction allowed the engineers to build a longer span than a true arch and gave the structure the artistic form of a true arch bridge.")
I think the first hook is adequately supported and considerably more hooky, but it's up to you. -Bryan Rutherford (talk) 14:28, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
The hook does imply that was the only reason, and in fact it was not even the main reason. If I passed this, I don't think it would ever get to the main page in that form. A minor change would suffice:
Do you want to go with ALT0A or ALT1? MB 03:58, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
Of those two I prefer ALT1, but it's your decision. -Bryan Rutherford (talk) 14:43, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
I had to add a citation in the article to the immediate sentence that supports the hook. Good to go with ALT1. MB 18:08, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
