Ladakh Chronicles

  • ... that one of the two surviving manuscripts of the Ladakh Chronicles is owned by a monk in the Lamayuru Monastery? Petech, Luciano (1977). The Kingdom of Ladakh: C. 950-1842 A.D. Istituto italiano per il Medio ed Estremo Oriente., p.2: "Seven manuscripts of this work are known to exist, or to have existed. [...] Ms.Sonam. In the private possession of dGe-rgan bSod- nams, a 'Bri-guh-pa monk from Lamayuru monastery."; pp.1-2 mention the five that disappeared (see Ladakh Chronicles#Known manuscripts).
    • ALT1:... that the Ladakh Chronicles is one of only two pre-19th century literary sources on the history of Ladakh? Petech, pp.1-2: "The main source for Ladakhi history is, and always will be, the La-dvags rgyal-rabs, compiled probably in the 17th century [...] The only other literary source from Ladakh is the biography of sTag-ts'ah-ras-pa (TTRP), compiled in 1663.."
    • ALT2:... that when Alexander Cunningham discovered the Ladakh Chronicles in 1847, he thought that the latter parts were too unimportant to publish? Petech, p.1: "Ms. Cunningham. During his stay in Ladakh in 1847, Alexander Cunningham caused a manuscript of the Chronicle to be translated for him into Urdu; a partial English version of it was incorporated in his work. The manuscript (or the Urdu translation) starts with Ts'e-dban-rnam-rgyal (16th century); the English version stops with bDe-legs-rnam-rgyal (end of the 17th century), since Cunningham deemed the rest of the story unimportant. Neither the manuscript nor its Urdu version are available now."

  • Awaiting QPQ. Article good, AGFing on sources. Hooks good, aside from that I would suggest ALT2 uses something like "latter parts of" rather than "end". CMD (talk) 15:06, 12 July 2020 (UTC)
  • Sorry! I've been pre-occupied with other matters and forgot about this. @97198: Thank you - that's incredibly kind of you. However, I'll do a QPQ right now so you can put yours to better use :) — MarkH21talk 08:38, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
  • @Chipmunkdavis: QPQ done and ALT2 modified as proposed by CMD. Thanks again and sorry for the delay. — MarkH21talk 08:46, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
