- ... that John C. Carson built the first sidewalk in Portland, Oregon? Source: On p. 1 of the 31 May 1911 edition of the Oregon Daily Journal there is an article titled: "John Carson, Who Built First Sidewalk in City of Portland, Dead". The article text says: "… in 1854, he obtained permission from the council to construct a sidewalk, the first in the city."
