Henry Ince

View of one of the galleries excavated by Henry Ince

  • ... that when a French general saw the tunnels (pictured) excavated by British Army Sergeant-Major Henry Ince, he is said to have exclaimed, "These works are worthy of the Romans"?

  • Good to go. It's kind of sad that people still insist we do this unnecessary double reviewing. Articles like these are generally less "commercial" in tone than a lot of articles we have at DYK and regularly go through easily.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 16:32, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Article says it was a (named) French commander, which is not quite the same as a general. Also, the hook fact could be (mis)construed as promotional (I don't think it is), so an alt would be nice so that we can stay on the safe side. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:02, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
  • Crillon was a lieutenant-general in the Spanish army - he's referred to here as "commander" because he was in overall command of the Franco-Spanish besieging force. I'm writing an article about him at the moment as the existing English one isn't much use; see fr:Louis Des Balbes de Berton de Crillon, duc de Mahon#Guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis for reference to his generalship ("il devint commandant général des armées espagnoles"). I really don't see the hook as promotional in any way - it has more to do with 18th century chivalry, something Crillon was renowned for (and which will be the hook for my DYK about him). • At least make his rank clear in the article. I also don't think the hook is promotional, but it could be read as such. I have no issues passing this with that hook — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:30, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
  • Article is new enough, long enough, and well referenced. Text is neutral, and Prioryman has no COI regarding the subject of this article. Image is correctly licensed and good enough to go on the main page. Hook is short enough, acceptably neutral, and interesting. Good to go! — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:42, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
