Dieter Thomas Heck

Dieter Thomas Heck

  • ... that German TV presenter Dieter Thomas Heck (pictured), known for the ZDF-Hitparade, stuttered as a boy when he was trapped after a 1943 bombing raid but got rid of the stutter with voice training?

Created/expanded by PumpkinSky (talk), Gerda Arendt (talk). Nominated by Gerda Arendt (talk) at 23:51, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

  • Voice training (Stimmbildung?) could be a training of the speaking voice, right? It was lessons in classical singing (to my surprise) that did it for him, how can we say that in short form? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:10, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
  • Also try link to public radio station ZDF, better known than the special series:
ALT1: ... that German TV presenter Dieter Thomas Heck (pictured), known for the ZDF-Hitparade, stuttered as a boy, trapped after a 1943 bombing raid, but got rid of of the stutter as a teenager with singing lessons? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:56, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
  • Interesting idea, meets size, date, referencing criteria. I note it was expanded only 3-fold and not 5-fold, but since it was an unreferenced WP:BLP before that's ok. Hook is a bit wordy, perhaps leave some data out given the audience (i.e he's known for ZDF-Hitparade but english speakers probably won't know what that is):
ALT2: ... that German TV presenter Dieter Thomas Heck (pictured), who stuttered as a boy after being trapped in a 1943 bombing raid, later got rid of his stutter with singing lessons? -- Ultracobalt (talk) 03:24, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Thanks for looking and for the excellent link! I prefer to mention at least one of his many achievements. "hit" and "parade" are words understandable to English Speakers, and there are links. The article was expanded from 540 characters of prose (tables don't count for DYK) on 19 April to 3303 now, begun 20 April.
ALT3: ... that German TV presenter Dieter Thomas Heck (pictured), known for the ZDF-Hitparade, stuttered as a boy, trapped after a 1943 bombing raid, but got rid of of the stutter as a teenager with singing lessons? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:32, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
ALT4: ... that German TV presenter Dieter Thomas Heck (pictured), known for the ZDF-Hitparade, began stuttering as a boy after being trapped in a 1943 bombing raid, but got rid of of the stutter as a teenager with singing lessons? PumpkinSky talk 09:50, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Can someone take a look at the new hooks and summarize which of them are approved for use? I've struck out ALT2 because of objections from Gerda. BlueMoonset (talk) 22:16, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Both ALT3 and ALT4 are only tweaks of the approved ALT1 with better links, I would prefer the last by the author ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:22, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Agree with Gerda, minor word tweaking doesn't require a new approval.PumpkinSky talk 22:26, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Regrettably, ALT4 is well over 200 characters, so it's disqualified right off the bat. Which is one reason all new ALTs should be approved, and by someone other than the person who wrote them. ALT3 is a bit rough, and I've been trying to smooth it. This is the best I've done so far; it's 195 characters when you exclude (pictured) and the space before it from the count:
Not bad, but I'd cut out the at age 16 part because conquering stuttering doesn't have after a a few lessons, it's generally a years long process. It's not like getting an innoculation. He started lessons at age 16. PumpkinSky talk 23:09, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
ALT6: ... that TV presenter Dieter Thomas Heck (pictured), known for the ZDF-Hitparade, stuttered as a boy from being trapped after a 1943 bombing raid, but conquered his stutter with singing lessons started at age 16? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:17, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
ALT6 is the best one yet. PumpkinSky talk 23:20, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Agreed that ALT6 is best of them all. Now to get a reviewer to look it over and give final approval to the hook. (Striking ALT5 for clarity.) BlueMoonset (talk) 23:45, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
  • ooo ALT6 is so close, but 'from being trapped' is odd in English, here's a suggested tweak:
ALT7: ... that TV presenter Dieter Thomas Heck (pictured), known for the ZDF-Hitparade, stuttered as a boy after being trapped in a 1943 bombing raid, but conquered his stutter with singing lessons started at age 16? -- Ultracobalt (talk) 01:14, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
fine with me, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:24, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Reconfirming that article was expanded 5x (DYKcheck), ALT7 hook is under 200 characters (194 excluding (pictured)) and hook facts all sourced (and although others here can read the German, I also checked via Google translate so I can reuse the regular tick instead of being stuck with the AGF tick), so this is all set. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:24, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Thanks for your precious extra effort! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:32, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
