I know that this is probably addressed somewhere, but can I simply quote things from the John M. Barry book? It's an extremely informative book, but it was just published. Are there copyright issues?

Skull and Bones

skull and bones an 'honourary society'? i think not! it is a secret society, and, presumably, very exclusive, but it is still just a 'social fraternity'. an honourary fraternity is something like phi beta kappa, psi chi, etc. unless good reason is presented to the contrary, i will delete 'honourary'. Plans for Improving the Article

We suggest that the bibliography can be separated into specific sections such as "family," "early life," "education," and "career." In addition, we plan to add a section about the awards and honors that Welch received throughout his lifetime. Further, we think it would be beneficial if the article contained a section listing any publications by Welch. We also plan to thoroughly describe Welch's contributions to medicine. For instance, he was great at creating cogent summations of various scientific work (e.g., "On the General Pathology of Fever")[1] My edited lead section can be found in my sandbox. As of right now, I think that the article is structured well. I do like the text box and the organizational separation of his Welch's life and his accomplishments. However, there could be some more information on early life. There is also some information that seems irrelevant, such as involvement in the skull and bones society. Structurally, one thing you might consider doing is creating a separate section for Welch's involvement in JHMI, as that is the focus of the class. I agree with User:Rserafi2, the structure of the article is well done and resembles that of more developed articles on Wikipedia. I would suggest splitting his career into more subsections regarding the different stages in his career including his role at JHMI as suggested in the previous review. I would also suggest separating his death into a new section as is often done and using bullet points to separate his honors and make them easier to scan through. Lastly, I would add any links to applicable pages in the article and separating sections that are dense with links such as in the last few paragraphs of the Career section as this makes the article easier to navigate. Peer Review by User:Devynbell114 Overall, this article is well-structure and informative. I would suggest splitting the career section into subsections based off the stages of his career. I think this will greatly improve the article. It would be useful if there was more information in the career section pertaining to Welch's time at JHMI. Also, you may want to consider adding a section dedicated to his research. Lastly, some of the links in the career section seem as though the they may not be necessary. Hey great start so far. This article has a lot of great information and really shows how important he was. One thing that I would suggest to improve is the later career section. It's very long and I think it could be broken into several other sub-categories such as research, teaching his students, contributions to medicine, medical societies he was a part of, etc. Good luck on finishing the article. There is a good amount of info here. However, I think there needs to be quite a bit of structural work done. First of all, it does not make sense to have an overarching "Bibliography" section because that limits your ability to subhead withing the Hopkins section. The Hopkins section is very long and needs to be split up somehow, so if you get rid of the bibliography heading and then separate your current sub-headings into new headings, then the Hopkins section can be better structured. Also, see if you can put some more info in the death section because it looks a bit light on the info. Good luck and great start! This article looks good! There is a typo in the third paragraph of the "later career at johns hopkins" section. It says "butv" instead of but. I agree with the comments above; if you can find any information on his personal life it would be great to add a section for it, as this article focuses mostly on his career. Article looks great! My only comment is that the Early Career section and the second part of the Later Career section have no references, so you should add those. Aside from that, there seems to be much more information on his later life than on his earlier one. If you were to continue working on it, I'd look for more information on his early life. Great article, guys! Some suggestions:

  • Singer Sargent's Big Four painting would be a great addition.
  • I would change S&B "fraternity" to Society
  • It would be cool to explain a bit about why he was selected to be a part of Hopkins' first faculty. I'm sure it sheds a lot of insight on what he was like as a young physician.
  • If you can, try to find the names of some important physicians that trained under Welch, since he's so well known for his teaching, and since Hopkins really was the first factory for renowned national medical faculty
  • "recognition of that fact, butv now the organism usually is designated" Just a typo
  • A legacy section would be cool, especially to isolate his contributions to pathology, teaching, US Medicine, and public health. Beyond awards.

The best feature of this article in my opinion has to be how you separated his career into two different sections. One being his earlier career and the other being his time at Hopkins. One thing that could use some improvement is his biography section in regards to his early life the introduction paragraph is longer than his early life and early career combine, possibly reducing the length of the introduction paragraph and adding some to those other sections will help the articles appearance.
