There are also non store-specific websites that allow for a more general registry. The main purpose is to avoid duplicate gifts and give guidance in order to get matching gifts.

Change "electronic gift registry" to "self-service gift registry"?

Department stores kept bridal registries on computer long before 1993, so it's not strictly accurate to call this the first electronic registry. The referenced patent is for a registry in a kiosk with a touch screen. Prior to this system customers had to ask the sales staff to get them a printout from the registry. So perhaps it would be better to call it the first self-service gift registry? Can anyone think of a better term? Lee Choquette (talk) 15:40, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Added "self-service" to the article as nobody raised an objection. Lee Choquette (talk) 20:24, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Change article name from "bridal registry" to "wedding registry"?

Anyone else think that "bridal registry" should be replaced by "wedding registry"? I understand that some still accept the term "bridal" to be interchangeable with "wedding", but I find that it is an increasingly biased word. Plus, several retailers (Target, Amazon, Kohls, and JC Penney for instance) use "wedding" or simply "gift" as the title of the registry, omitting the word "bridal". ronnycary (talk) 17:27, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If more stores indeed call it a "wedding registry" than a "bridal registry", I have no objection if you change the article name to "Wedding registry" (replacing the existing redirect by that name), and then add a redirect to the article from "Bridal registry".
Alternatively, you might merge the contents of this article with "Gift registry", and then have both "Wedding registry" and "Bridal registry" redirect to "Gift registry". Lee Choquette (talk) 23:35, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
