The man that Saved The USS Lowry in the 1969 Gun Turret Explosion

My father Donald C. Major was a member of the crew aboard the USS Lowry. He received a medal for ensuring that the explosives under the damaged turret were removed before the fire caused them to explode. If he had not done so, the ship would have been lost. The other survivors at the turret were trying to get away from the area, but my father ordered them to stay and help to get the powder cakes out of the damaged area. His actions on that day saved the ship. I am not sure of his rank at that time, but my father was the ranking officer near the turret. His orders had to be obeyed by the men under his command. He also made sure his men did not desert their post. Donald C. Major served 21 years and 7 months in the US Navy, reaching the rank of First Class Bosun's Mate. Because of his actions that saved the USS Lowry, when he retired, I and the rest of my family heard the story from the Admiral that conducted his retirement ceremony. This is why I know the above story concerning the heroism of my father. To whomever is the host of this site, if you would include this in the article about the history of the USS Lowry, I and my family will thank you for it. 172.56.66.234 (talk) 18:50, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
