Which part of the plant is used

The Pinyin is "Lei Gong Teng". Teng in this case is usually translated as "vine." However, the latin pharmaceutical is "Radix Tripterygium Wilfordii" indicating that is actually the root.2602:306:CF7B:23F0:D42D:AEFD:E0CB:AB97 (talk) 00:13, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thunder Duke Vine?

"雷公" in "雷公藤" apparently refers Lei Gong, which is a Chinese traditional religion deity. "Duke" really makes no sense here. --Ahyangyi (talk) 07:43, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps the above mistranslation is due to the interpreting the character http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E5%85%AC that denotes male instead of "duke." I have been trying to locate the source but I've heard this herb also called "qī bù sǐ" or "seven steps till death", referring of course to its extreme toxicity.2602:306:CF7B:23F0:D42D:AEFD:E0CB:AB97 (talk) 00:08, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

~~Sounds like one of the fictitious poisons in wuxia novels, or possibly Yellow Jessamine, which may be the "intestine-breaking plant" that killed Shennong.~~ The "Seven Steps Till Death" poison is the sap of the Upas tree, Antiaris toxicaria, which is found from Yunnan to Polynesia.
