Bendel boy, would you please give some thought to merging this Trickling filter article with the Biological trickling filters (Biofilters)? There really is no reason to have two articles covering the same subject ... and I see nothing to be gained by that.

I also think that the merged article should be named Trickling filter rather than the much more cumbersome Biological trickling filters (Biofilters). - mbeychok 20:31, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've no idea how to rename a page.
The creation of two articles by the same name is because when I looked for existing material I didn't get a hit with 'biological trickling filters' - I set up redirects for the various names I knew, and have now set trickling filter to redirect to biological trickling filter. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bendel boy (talk • contribs) 08:03, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Septic drain field / Tricking filter merge

From what I understand about biofilms, a septic drain field is functionally identical to the methods of a trickling filter. There really is no reason to keep them separate, and so trickling filter should be the main article since it is more general of the two articles, and septic drain field becoming a redirect. Should be 2 separate articles. Although the principles are the same, my understanding is that significant differences come into play due to differences between soil and controlled filter bed materials, which eliminates the need to account for individual soil characteristics, but introduces other issues. Causes of failure are quite different, for instance. You don't see soil failure due to redistribution of the silt fraction, and you don't see mineral carbon/iron precipitation in soil, both problems that dog sand medium. Soil has a large set of issues that don't apply to filter beds. Consequently, I feel more comfortable keeping these as two separate articles. Agree that the two should be kept separate. The trickling filter is typically an above ground aerobic environment followed by a clarifier. The septic drain field is an underground anaerobic or facultative environment integrated with a percolation disposal system. I will remove the merger tag from the drain field article.
