Biography

Some of the factual material I used in expanding this article is paraphrased from a four-page document called Biography written by Trevor Baylis and used with his permission. (He gave me a copy of this document at the London Exhibition where I took the photograph of him in January). Since using it in writing this article, I have discovered some other websites that have published this same source document word-for-word. I'm adding this note to confirm that I have not violated the copyright of these other websites. Euchiasmus 12:08, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In order for us to use material, it must be verifiable: that is, someone independent should be able to check the article against what the reference says. That's very difficult to do with an unpublished source, even if it comes from the subject of the article himself. To use this material we should source it better; if the same material is published in his book, on his website (or that of his company), or from some reliable third party like a newspaper interview or (as some other material is sourced) from a biography of him connected with his charity work or an award he's won. 'm sure you're 100% right that the same biography, produced by Mr Baylis, is the original source for many of these copies - we just need to source it better, to make the info verifiable. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 17:00, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I guess this is his official biography; as that's coming straight from his company, that makes it an excellent, reliable, and verifiable source (at least for anything uncontentious). -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 17:21, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eh? Mr Baylis' own official biography, from his own company, is the very definition of a non-independent source! In general, official biographies are notorious for POV: presenting their subjects in a favourable light, avoiding candidness, and exaggerating their achievements. Centrepull (talk)

Quotes

I included some quotes from Trevor Baylis when I wrote this article as I thought they complemented the third person narrative and gave valuable insight. These were later moved to wikiquote by MrWeeble - I'm pleased they are now in wikiquote. I left a note on his talk page asking if he would mind if I also included them in the article:

I actually think that keeping a copy of these quotes in the article genuinely contributes to the reader's understanding of the man and his work - I could add the material in the third person to the article body, but I think it would lose immediacy and authenticity. Do you have any objection to my copying the quotes back into the article (and, of course, leaving the copy you put in wikiquote)?

Since MrWeeble has not expressed any objection, I have reinstated them today. Euchiasmus 21:28, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
