Book and film
I find it a bit awkward to write about the differences between the book and the film without summarizing the plot. 84.59.76.130 23:30, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

Criticism of the film version
I removed the following line: "The movie often uses Celtic music which is a feature of Newfoundland as a whole, even though the specific locale of the story was actually settled by English settlers from Cornwall and the Channel Islands."
The "specific locale of the story" was fictional. There is no reference in either the novel or the screenplay to where in Newfoundland the story takes place -- other than locations that Proulx made up. Thus, the reference to settlers from Cornwall and the Channel Islands (though true for the real Trinity and New Bonaventure) are irrelevant as a basis for criticising the film.--OldCommentator 22:58, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Possible Mistake in Article
In the plot summary it infers that Quoyle (the main character) has only one daughter. This is incorrect. The film version ignores his youngest child Sunshine. In the novel Quoyle has two daughters which are both sold by Petal and accompany him to Newfoundland

Because of the confusion and the mixing of categories, I split the pages into two: The Shipping News for the novel and The Shipping News (film). I also changed a majority of the links and will carry on with that until it's better. :) Maria 18:05, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
