The use of the term "black man" vs. "African American", used in describing the presumed slave in the image, was discussed with Wikipedians during the edit-a-thon at the American Art Museum on 2013-02-15. We decided to use the term "black man" because that is the term used by Curator Eleanor Jones Harvey in her catalog essay about the painting.
