Talk:Statesboro Northern Railway

That part of the line between Statesboro and Garfield was constructed between 1907 and 1909 as a standard-gauge steam railroad by the Savannah, Augusta & Northern Railway Company. The properties of that company were sold under foreclosure in 1910 to W. J. Oliver, and shortly thereafter the line was extended to Stevens Crossing. In 1915 the Midland Railway purchased the properties and operated the line until March 15, 1922, when its railroad was placed in the hands of a receiver by the Superior Court of Chatham County, Ga. In December, 1923, the properties were sold at a foreclosure sale. The rails were bid in by H. C. Weller, and the right of way, crossties, buildings, and remaining property by other parties who in turn sold the properties thus acquired to Ben E. May. H. C. Weller then purchased May's equity in the line.

However, the 1916 ICC annual report says the SA&N was merged into the Midland Railway in 1915, and previous reports show the SA&N leased to the Savannah and Statesboro Railway. --NE2 20:20, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
