This is a nice article. Some might question why it's here (as it's about a region rather than a particular nation) but I applaud the effort to regionalize Wikipedia. Regions do exist and culture regions are extremely important in anthropology. The article reads as if it was written by someone with insider knowledge, so it needs sources (I don't doubt the details, but Wikipedia needs sources). I provided a couple for the historical/archaeological section. Any ordinary reference in the Caribbean will provide much of the rest. I am meaning to write an article on "culture regions" for Wikipedia and this article inspires me to remember to do it (and I'll link to it). That, in turn, will link to the cultural anthropology page. I believe there should be many more articles about local migrations, how people actually view their cultural geography, and not just about nation-states. This is a good start. Contact me on my talk page for any more help. I removed the "no citations" tag and changed it to just "needs more citations" instead.--Levalley (talk) 23:43, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles

After the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, references to this country should now be replaced.

Jamaica vs "The Smallies"

This entire section needs to be either rewritten or deleted since it is both factually incorrect and has no citations.

The section uses the term "smallies" to refer to the islands of the lesser Antilles but this is a pejorative word either of the author's own creation or used by Jamaicans to belittle people from the smaller islands. I've only heard the term "small islander" used (and only in one direction, Jamaican to small island victim) as the article latter admits but unfortunately I can't provide a reference for this. I think, however, that unbiased logic would show that people don't usually belittle themselves. The tone of this section is therefore set by the title of it.

The phrased "non anglophone" and "anglophone" Caribbean are apparently used to differentiate between Jamaica and the smaller islands however Jamaica is not only part of the British (anglophone West indies) but English is the official language of that island so the sentence "In the USA, Canada, and the UK, the non-Anglophone Caribbean community is mixed with many from the Anglophone Caribbean community." is completely redundant and should be removed at once or explained further. Just as Jamaican patois is recognised as a language, so are the other creole and patois languages of the Caribbean but since all English based creoles are mutually intelligible there's no need to refer to Jamaica as "non anglophone" and imply that language difference has anything to do with the bigotry in the Caribbean community.

The section also states that Caribbean people blamed each other for selling them out into slavery. Jamaica was settled after Barbados and some slaves were taken from there to Jamaica so again I think that this shows that the section is written with a Jamaican bias and should be removed. In fact the people of the Caribbean tend to blame people of West Africa for selling them into slavery but again, I can't find a reliable source for this at the moment.

The paragraph on inter-island marriage is just wrong. In Britain and particularly Britain, Jamaicans and people from the other parts of the British West Indies were friends and co-habited as they were unable to get accommodation from white people. They also intermarried or just plain interbred, no marriage required. The Brixton riots did not create unity in the black community either.

The entire section is very one sided, incorrect and redundant. Since it doesn't even have citations I do believe that it should be removed. Iynx (talk) 12:34, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Bonaire, Dominica, and Martinique etc.

Who defined the extent of the Southern Caribbean? Why are Bonaire, the Federal Dependencies of Venezuela, Dominica, Martinique, and Nueva Esparta not parts of the Southern Caribbean? Aren't Bonaire, the Federal Dependencies of Venezuela, and Nueva Esparta the southernmost Caribbean islands in the world? 2001:8003:9008:1301:FC5F:C6D7:96E4:CC45 (talk) 13:31, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
