Ok, I've re-written pretty much all of the article. It was all over the place, so I'll let my changes speak for themselves. This is, however, my first major rewrite of any page, so I'm all ears on stuff that might need changing. It would appear that there is at least one employee of Sigma-Adrich making edits, as large parts of the article seemed to be lifted more or less intact from Sigma's website. Meger with Sigma Advanced Engineering

I would like to take on the task of merging Sigma Advanced Engineering with this article. I would place the stub about it from its seperate wikipedia page and put it under the subsidiaries and try to expand the article with information from the website. Time for a Rewrite

Hey guys! I think the article could use some work. The lede is almost word-for-word lifted from Sigma's website. The other sections are a bit fragmented as well. I'd like to:

Update the info box with newer data if available
Reformat the lede so that it's more original and informative
Rewrite the history section to make it flow better. There used to be a bunch of info about Sigma and Aldrich as separate companies. Maybe we could pull that stuff up and spin those off into their own articles about the Sigma chemical company and the Aldrich chemical company. It might be worth looking into. The more recent mergers could maybe be worked into a smoother format somehow.
The key numbers section: not sure if this is a normal section for company pages. Let's look into it. If it's normal we will keep it. If not, let's work the information in somewhere else.
The business units section can probably be split into a section about the company's operations or something.
I'm not convinced the "Awards" section adds anything to the article. I could maybe be convinced if someone has strong feelings about it. Similarly with the "Distributors" section. I'm not sure what to do with that material.
The "Subsidiaries" section is a bit of a mess and makes the "Contents" box look pretty ugly. Not sure what to do with this either, but I'm open to suggestions.

I'm going to start slowly plugging away at this as I have free time, but I'm hoping we can all work on it together and I'm happy to hear ideas/suggestions. Let me know what you think! Thanks! Ajpolino (talk) 07:54, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding "History info is proving tricky to find": I read Alfred Bader's first memoir ([http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Chemist-Collector-Alfred-Bader/dp/0297834614 Adventures of a Chemist Collector]) in about 2011 or 12 and can recommend it for this purpose. Good book, and interesting for the history of Aldrich Co from the 1950s until the merger in 75. Also some for Sigma-Aldrich from 75 to 91. Sadly I would have to reread it now to be able to add info to this article, as I forget most of the details. I do remember, though, that I looked on Wikipedia at Fine chemical > History a few months back and thought to myself, "I'm not convinced this isn't missing something, based on my half-remembered Bader 1995." Specifically, the alleged sharp distinction between specialty chemicals and fine chemicals, and whether not everyone in the chemical industries differentiates them the same way that article does, and whether that article is on crack for claiming that the fine chemicals business didn't exist until the 1970s. Anyway, for history info tricky to find, Bader 1995 is recommendable. — ¾-10 22:05, 31 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Merck takeover

I've removed reference to the takeover having been completed in July 2015, since as of now, regulatory approvals are still being obtained (see company website), and the shares are still trading. Dimethyl Tetrachloroterephthalate/Pestanal

Hey folks! I've removed the See also: Dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate as well as the mention of Pestanal as a product line. I assume it was added on here to increase the visibility of that page, but I don't think it's really appropriate here. My understanding is that Pestanal isn't really a product line from sigma, it's just another product. They make about a zillion other things, so it seems odd to mention it in the See Also section unless there's some reason it's particularly notable? Happy to talk about it. Thanks!
