Drug abuse

What about self-handicapping and drug abuse? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vintermann (talkcontribs) 08:39, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Gender differences

I haven't added it as I'm a bit lazy to re-dig up and cite the sources, but there are several theories and papers suggesting that the gender differences in self-handicapping is in direct parallel to self-handicapping in sexual selection (for example, in a sexual selection handicap, a male may disadvantage himself physically or otherwise in order to prove his ability to overcome said disadvantage and advertise himself as a superior partner). Treatment?

How do people get treated to stop having this type of selfdestructive behavior? --TiagoTiago (talk) 01:26, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Individual differences

Please rephrase this sentence for clarity.

"Students who fear failure are more likely to adopt performance goals in the classroom or goals focused on the demonstration of competence or avoidance of demonstrating incompetence; goals that heighten one's sensitivity to failure.[21]"

Is this what you mean? "Students who fear failure are more likely to adopt performance goals that heighten one's sensitivity to failure."

If so, this contradicts earlier statements that self handicapping seemingly serves to insulate the person from direct failure. Do you mean that their performance goals are self defeating in the long run. Please clarify. The sentence itself is convoluted and the example does not clarify the point very well. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sflynn (talkcontribs) 17:20, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Any actual reference for the scale itself?

The only citation that directly relates to the SHS is a short, hyperlink-less reference to - somewhat unbelievably - an "unpublished manuscript".

Surely, when there's a half dozen other properly qualified links to journal articles analysing, using, or deconstructing the efficacy of said scale (but not revealing any of its actual secrets IE what it measures etc), we can do better than that?! 193.63.174.254 (talk) 20:20, 14 November 2016 (UTC)
