Talk:Selenomonad

The purpose of this short article on Selenomonas is to stimulate interest and research on these unusual complex protists. It is almost certain that the group will someday be split (perhaps at family or higher level) as a result of future research - the published morphological distinctions are alone sufficient reasons for that. What is presently lacking is genetic analysis of the genus; modern separation techniques should allow the selection of single cells from rumen fluid, so this already looks feasible. Classification

This page classifies Selenomonads with the Firmicutes (Gram-positive) but there is an article on them in The Prokaryotes by Hespell et al that clearly says they are anaerobic Gram-negative curved rods. A quick look at ref 3 confirms this. What's the basis for the classification given here? Telliott (talk) 20:43, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

The present classification of Selenomonas in the Firmicutes is probably based entirely on 16S RNA genome data, rather than on the traditional Gram stain division of prokaryotes. Although 16S analysis has proved to be a powerful method in determining relationships, it measures only a small part of the total genetic information in an organism and can certainly not provide a complete answer, therefore warnings has been given not to place too much reliance on this method, when used alone.
