proposed changes

Could this language "Not to be confused with Advanced Science" be made smaller or moved to the bottom of the page?

Can the sentence in the first section beginning "The journal's scope" be linked to the following reference? Science Advances Mission and Scope. Science.org [1]

Can the sentence beginning "The journal's scope" be updated as follows? The journal's scope[1] includes all areas of science, including life sciences, public health, neurosciences, physical sciences, social sciences, computer sciences, and environmental and space sciences.

In the history section, can the first sentence be updated as follows?

The journal was announced by Marcia McNutt and Alan I. Leshner in February 2014, and the first articles were published in early 2015.

Could the mention of February 2014 be linked to this reference? Announcing Science Advances. https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1251654

Could the section Editorial structure be renamed as Editorial structure and journal scope?

Could the sentence beginning with "The board is divided" be updated to: The board is divided into topical areas, each led by a deputy editor and composed of a group of associate editors."

After "topical areas" above, could we please link to the following reference?

Science Advances’ Editorial Board.https://www.science.org/content/page/science-advances-editorial-board

At the end of the Editorial structure section, could we please add this sentence?

"The journal seeks to publish impactful research papers and reviews in any area of science, in both disciplinary-specific and broad, interdisciplinary areas."

Could the open access policies section please be updated as follows?

As of 2019, the article processing charge for articles published under a CC BY-NC or CC BY license is $4,500. All content is freely accessible to all readers. When the journal was launched, the policy of offering different license choices to authors was initially criticized by open access advocates, who preferred the less restrictive CC BY license.

To end the entry, could we please add this section?

Science family of journals The Science family of journals includes Science, Science Translational Medicine, Science Signaling, Science Advances, Science Immunology and Science Robotics. Among the Science family of journals, Science Advances is the only fully open access title.

After "Robotics" in the added section above, could we please link to the following reference?

@Mphelan123: Happy to take a look. Comments below.
Could this language "Not to be confused with Advanced Science" be made smaller or moved to the bottom of the page? -  Not done This is a "hatnote" at the top, which is standardized across Wikipedia. There is one in the Advanced Science article pointing here, too.
Can the sentence in the first section beginning "The journal's scope" be linked to the following reference? -  Partly done The preference on Wikipedia is for the lead of an article to summarize the body, and for the references to be in the body. Accordingly I've moved the citation for the published down. I've also added the link you requested, along with the longer break-out of fields, under the editorial board and scope section.
Can the sentence beginning "The journal's scope" be updated as follows?  Done see above.
The journal was announced by Marcia McNutt and Alan I. Leshner in February 2014, and the first articles were published in early 2015. -  Not done The major change is to add the names, correct? Could you say more about what that adds to the statement? Typically, Wikipedia prefers to report on things like announcements based on what other sources say about the announcement. In other words, if McNutt and Leshner weren't mentioned outside of their own write-up, it's probably not WP:DUE in the article.
Could the mention of February 2014 be linked to this reference?  Done We prioritize independent sources, but I see no harm in including the original, too.
Could the section Editorial structure be renamed as Editorial structure and journal scope? -  Done Works for me. This created a place for the scope to be copied into, too.
Could the sentence beginning with "The board is divided" be updated to: The board is divided into topical areas, each led by a deputy editor and composed of a group of associate editors."  Done
After "topical areas" above, could we please link to the following reference? That appears to be there already?
"The journal seeks to publish impactful research papers and reviews in any area of science, in both disciplinary-specific and broad, interdisciplinary areas." -  Not done Mainly due to "impactful", this is a bit too promotional. Could you suggest a way to work your meaning into the current version?
As of 2019, the article processing charge for articles published under a CC BY-NC or CC BY license is $4,500. All content is freely accessible to all readers. When the journal was launched, the policy of offering different license choices to authors was initially criticized by open access advocates, who preferred the less restrictive CC BY license. -  Partly done I revised the section to rely less on jargon and added some of your suggestion.
Science family of journals -  Not done This would be undue weight, and comes too close to feeling like the journal's official site. We do have a line about being the only fully open access title (specifically "where all papers are gold open access"), although that line needs a citation. Do you have one we could add (again, preferably an independent citation).
After "Robotics" in the added section above, could we please link to the following reference? -  Not done Wikipedia really doesn't like basing anything on press releases. I added the one above (labeled as editorial, but similar in function to a press release) because it's being used as a supplemental reference rather than justifying the inclusion of any material.
Unrelated to your request, but maybe something you can help with: the line In 2019, Science Advances surpassed Science Magazine in the number of monthly submissions, becoming the largest member in the Science family of journals. - needs a citation to a reliable source, too. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 13:42, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Here, you could link to our journal metrics page, which lists number of submissions for each Science family journal: https://www.science.org/content/page/journal-metrics Mphelan123 (talk) 14:31, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
With respect to the edit above that was not incorporated due to the use of "impactful," could I please replace that request to make a change with the following request, in the same section?
After the first sentence in the Editorial structure and journal scope section, could we please add this sentence?
"The journal seeks to publish research papers and reviews in both disciplinary-specific and broad, interdisciplinary areas." Mphelan123 (talk) 14:32, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Additional Proposed Changes

Hello!

We have some additional edit requests, listed below. Please let me know if I can provide rationale, additional information, etc.!

Bolded text indicates additions/edits to text.

---

Summary

  1. Request: Could we add the following sentence to the end of the “Summary” section? “The journal is part of the Science Family of Journals, of which Holden Thorp is the Editor-in-Chief.”
  2. Reason: For context -The Science journals have an overall Editor in Chief (Holden Thorp), but each journal is then managed by individual Editors, who we prefer not to list.
  3. Link: https://www.science.org/content/page/leadership-and-management#HoldenThorp

  1. Request: After the sentence above, please add the following sentence to the end of the “Summary” section: “According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2022 impact factor of 13.6.”
  2. Reason: We are trying to standard this across the Science family of journals.
  3. Link:https://jcr.clarivate.com/jcr-jp/journal-profile?journal=SCI%20ADV&year=2022&fromPage=%2Fjcr%2Fhome

History

  1. Request: If appropriate, a reference to the official metrics page could be added to the sentence “Science Advances surpassed Science Magazine in the number of monthly submissions, becoming the largest member in the Science family of journals.”
  2. Reason: This page presents the official submission data.
  3. Link: https://www.science.org/content/page/journal-metrics-overview

Scope

  1. Request: Please create a "Scope" section separate from "Editorial Structure".
  2. Reason: We’re aiming to have the structure of the pages as consistent as possible across the journals.

  1. Request: If this is possible, please move the Scope text currently in the “Editorial Structure and Scope” section into this new “Scope” Section: “The journal's scope includes all areas of science, including life sciences, public health, neurosciences, physical sciences, social sciences, computer sciences, environmental sciences, and space sciences.”

  1. Request: Please add the following sentence to the end of the previous scope text: “Published research and reviews include both discipline-specific topics and interdisciplinary topics. Aside from research in the sciences, the journal occasionally publishes select engineering research.
  2. Reason: This more accurately reflects the journal's scope.
  3. Link: https://www.science.org/content/page/science-advances-mission-and-scope

Editorial Structure

  1. Request: If the edits above are accepted, please rename this section to “Editorial Structure”.
  2. Link: If appropriate, please update Reference 5 to the editorial working groups page, which lists out the current groups/editors: https://www.science.org/content/page/science-advances-editorial-working-groups

Open access policies

  1. Request: To clarify the history of the license options: Please update the third sentence to read “When the journal was launched, it offered both CC BY and CC BY-NC license options but its policy…" Please add the following sentence to the end of the section: "As of 2021, this default policy is no longer in place and the CC BY and CC BY-NC license options are evenly represented for author selection."
  2. Reason: This more accurately represents the history of the journal's policies.
  3. Link: https://www.science.org/content/page/science-advances-licensing-and-charges

  1. Request: Please correct the text reference to “CC NC-BY to “CC BY-NC”.
  2. Reason: The current text has the NC and BY swapped.
  3. Link: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/

See Also

  1. Request: Could the “See Also” section be updated with the following links? AAAS Publications (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Association_for_the_Advancement_of_Science#Publications) Science (Journal) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_(journal)) List of Scientific Journals (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_scientific_journals)
  2. Reason: We are trying to standardize this across journal pages.

Not a request, but a question: Could we get more insight as to why Nature Communications is linked to in the See Also section? It isn’t mentioned in the article.

Right Rail

  1. Request: Would it be possible to update the cover image used in the right rail? We can provide a higher-resolution image, if so.

  1. Request: Please update “Edited by” to just Holden Thorp.
  2. Reason: We are aiming to make this consistent across the journal pages.

  1. Request: Could the publisher be updated to read “American Association for the Advancement of Science (United States)”?
  2. Reason: We are aiming to make this consistent across the journal pages.

  1. Request: Please add the CODEN: SACDAF
  2. Reason: We are trying to standardize the set of information that appears for each journal in the right rail.

  1. Request: Please add an Online Access link: https://www.science.org/toc/sciadv/current
  2. Reason: We are trying to standardize the set of information that appears for each journal in the right rail.

  Unable to review

  • Your edit request could not be reviewed because the provided references are not formatted correctly.[a] The citation style predominantly used by the Science Advances article is Citation Style 1 (CS1). The citation style used in the edit request consists of bare URL's.[b] Any requested edit of yours which may be implemented will need to resemble the current style already in use in the article – in this case, CS1. (See WP:CITEVAR.) In the extended section below titled Citation style, I have illustrated two examples: one showing how the edit request was submitted, and another showing how requests should be submitted in the future:
Citation style
Bare URL reference formatting:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337 miles,[1] while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.[2] The Sun's temperature is 5,778 Kelvin.[3]

References

1. https://www.booksource.com
2. http://www.journalsource.com
3. http://www.websource.com

In the example above there are three URL's provided with the claim statements, but these URL's have not been placed using Citation Style 1, which is the style predominantly used by the Science Advances article. Using this style, the WikiFormatted text should resemble the following:

Citation Style 1 formatting:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337 miles,<ref>{{cite book|last1=Sjöblad|first1=Tristan|title=The Sun|url=http://www.booksource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2020|page=1}}</ref> while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.<ref>{{cite journal|last1=Harinath|first1=Prisha|title=Size of the Moon|journal=Science|issue=78|volume=51|url=http://www.journalsource.com|date=2020|page=46}}</ref> The Sun's temperature is 5,778 Kelvin.<ref>{{cite web|last1=Uemura|first1=Shu|title=The Sun's Heat|url=http://www.websource.com|publisher=Academic Press|date=2020|page=2}}</ref>

Which displays as:

The Sun's diameter is 864,337 miles,[1] while the Moon's diameter is 2,159 miles.[2] The Sun's temperature is 5,778 Kelvin.[3]

  3. ^ Uemura, Shū. The Sun's Heat. Academic Press, 2020, p. 2.

In the example above the references have been formatted according to Citation Style 1, which shows the author, the source's name, date, etc., all information which is lost when only the links are provided. As Wikipedia is a volunteer project, edit requests such as yours are generally expected to have this formatting done before the request is submitted for review.

Kindly resubmit the edit request below at your earliest convenience, taking care to ensure that it makes use of CS1. If you have any questions about this formatting please don't hesitate to ask myself or another editor. Additionally, the COI editor is invited to disclose the nature of their COI on their talk page per WP:COIDISCLOSE. Regards,  Spintendo  22:48, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ The fault for this formatting error may have originated with the automated prompts used by the edit request template, which asks for a COI editor to "supply the URL of any references used". While the resulting omission of information would not be the fault of the requesting COI editor, it nevertheless remains their responsibility to supply the references formatted in the style used by the article.
  2. ^ The use of bare URLs as references is a style which is acceptable for use in Wikipedia. However, general practice dictates that the style already in use for an article be the one that is subsequently used for all future additions unless changed by editorial consensus.[1]

If the article you are editing is already using a particular citation style, you should follow it.
