wood on top?

Reference 3 specifically talks about 5 meters of ore on top of a layer of wood. The process described here places the wood on top of the ore. If both processes were in use (which I don't know) that should be mentionned. I'm no expert. I just note the discrepancy.

On Quartz Roasting

I was reading up on ceramics, which lead me to Kilns, which lead me to Quartz Roasting Pits Complex

I then looked into why this is done, it seems unlike what this page says it was mainly just to fracture the rock and make it easier to crush? Either way this seems odd, and this is not my field so what i found may be honestly kind of useless but i thought it is better to document it than to let it go to waste!
