is the numbering correct?
since propyne has 3 carbons and the triple bond occurs at carbon #1, then isn't propargyl as drawn in this article called "3-propynyl"? --lifeform (talk) 23:52, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
- It's 2-propynyl, not 3-propynyl, because unbranched hydrocarbon "radical" names (where there is no numeral before the "yl"), are created using the rule, that the carbon atom with the free valence is numbered as 1 (IUPAC 1979 rule A-1.2). 2-propyn-1-yl or prop-2-yn-1-yl alternative "spellings" are sometimes used as well. Propyne-3-yl name might seem to be correct, but it violates the mentioned rule. --Mykhal (talk) 18:54, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
