There seems to be both this article and map projection. Since both seem to be talking about essentially the same things, it might be worthwhile to merge them and redirect the other. If so, someone with a better background in mathematics or cartography would be better suited to the task than myself. -- IHCOYC

Projection in databases

I'm missing the definition of projection in database systems. Can anyone please set the link and write the article? --MauriceKA 09:33, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Geographic use of orthographic projection

. Many place names in WikiPedia use an orthographic projection image of the earth to more usefully illustrate the position on the surface of the earth. The advantage is that of the orthographic projection is that is gives more 'practical' position & directional information to near-by (same hemisphere) features (coasts, islands, continents, etc.) which are directly usable for aircraft flights, radio propagation, etc.
. It would be useful to indicate how new projections can be generated when someone puts in a new place name.
