Was there not also a factor operating here in the desire of mostly absentee English landowners (of Irish land) wanting to convert the subsistence tenant farms of the day to the more profitable raising of cattle ? I think there was an article on PBS radio in the last several years on this.

There is a page on the Irish Potato Famine (1845-1849) which deals with many aspects of the matter, including your sugestion. (RJP 08:09, 5 April 2006 (UTC))[reply]
