Removed Drawing of Padlock

I removed the drawing of a padlock (Image:Padlock.svg) as I don't see any reason that a drawing of a padlock contributes something that the actual images of padlock do not. Perhaps if it was a schematic of cutaway drawing it might be more helpful. --Matthew 21:49, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article is only about the padlocks in America. Padlocks are dated back before medieval times. There is evidence that locks were not uncommon in the medieval period. The company Chubb played an inportant part in their development (in india Chubby is used as the term for locks keys etc. In New Guinea they are also used as status symbols despite not having doors to lock. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.163.247.91 (talk) 11:47, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology

US-centric

"The earliest padlocks used in the United States, sometimes called smokehouse locks, were formed from wrought iron sheet and employed simple lever and ward mechanisms. The design was brought over from England. These locks afforded little protection against forced and surreptitious entry. Contemporary with the smokehouse padlocks and originating in the Slavic areas of Europe, “screw key” padlocks opened with a helical key that was threaded into the keyhole."

Absolutely. Padlocks (mango locks) have been made in Dindigul (Tamil Nadu, India) for hundreds of years.See: The Devilishly Difficult Locks of Dindigul. --scruss (talk) 23:03, 9 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
