Renaming the page
Should this page be renamed to 4-AcO-DMT? I feel pretty confident that the vast majority of people who know of this molecule know of it as 4-AcO-DMT and refer to it as such. Even psilacetin might be better as some people are familiar with that name, I've simply never heard anyone ever refer to this molecule as O-Acetylpsilocin in everyday life. - Disagree. O-Acetyl-Psilocin is the best name. DMT doesn't have a 4-hydroxy group. This substance is an acetyl group ontop of Psilocin's hydroxy group. It's Acetyl-Psilocin and the O-Acetyl let's us know it's on the hydroxy and not the nitrogen.
- People seem to commonly confuse and think 4-AcO-DMT is an acetyl prodrug to DMT because they miss the AcO meaning acetoxy instead of acetyl. In my opinion reverting back to 4-AcO-DMT is akin to if we decided to rename the Psilocin article to 4-OH-N,N-DMT. Gettinglit (talk) 21:48, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, I too have seen a number of people assuming that 4-AcO-DMT must be similar to DMT because of the name so you're correct there. But still, the overwhelming majority of people have zero idea what an acetyl group is (much less an outdated term like ortho) so referring to the compound as O-Acetyl-Psilocin doesn't explain anything to 99.9% of people besides making it more clear that this is not DMT. Psilacetin on the other hand is a less imposing, less technical version of the name that still conveys that this isn't DMT, implies a relation to psilocin *and* psilacetin yields more search results. You've convinced me that we should not refer to it as 4-AcO-DMT nor O-Acetyl-Psilocin. Psilacetin (talk) 06:01, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
