Muslim Sects

Do Muslim Roma belong to the various Islamic sects, such as Sunni, Shia, etc? I know that Christian Roma also belong to the various denominations, such as Catholic, Protestant, & Orthodox? So, would it be the same with Muslims?--Splashen (talk) 17:10, 15 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It depends. Both on the people and your definition of a sect. Most are Sunni but some like the Chingene observe some degree of Shia traditions to the point it's kinda hard to fit them into one category. Not all Muslim Roma are Xoraxane. This needs to be rewritten

There are many non-Balkan Roma who are devout Muslims. This includes the Greek Roma who are Muslims, the Çingene/Dajfa and of course new converts from non-Muslim subgroups of Roma. If people profess Islam, they should be taken at their word, regardless of their ethnic origin, Balkan or not. Discussion

@Sökerdan: In continuation of our discussion on Russian Wikipedia about Xoraxane vs non-Xoraxane Muslim Roma. I completely agree and have been trying to clarify that "Roma Muslim" and "Xoraxane" are not interchangable. While we all agree that British Roma who convert to Islam are obviously not Xoraxane and that needs to be made clear, the issue of which other Muslim Roma groups are Xoraxane is a bit confusing and needs clarification. I was under the impression that the Crimean Roma do not fall into the Xoraxane category because they live under Crimean Tatar identity, but you claimed that they are in the Xoraxane category. However, I can't find a comprehensive list of all the types of Xoraxane groups. The Simple English Wikipedia says that the different kinds of Xoraxane Roma are the ones who speak only Romani language, Xoraxane Roma who speak only Albanian language, Xoraxane Roma who speak only Turkish language, Xoraxane Roma who speak only Crimean Tatar language, and Xoraxane Roma who speak only South Slavic languages, but the source used in the citation does not correspond to that information (http://konferenca.unishk.edu.al/icrae2013/icraecd2013/doc/897.pdf). I was under the impression that the Muslim Roma outside of the Balkans like Crimea, Iran, etc are not in the Xoraxane category. The other statement in Simple English Wikipedia that Xoraxane "is a religious Umbrella term for Muslims Roma people groups from the Balkans, Turkey, Northern Cyprus, Crimea and there descendants" I could not verify either because the source used doesn't mention them by name either either https://www.romarchive.eu/en/terms/xoraxane-roma/. It just says that the term is for "Roma professing Muslim faith in the Balkan states", and we know that there are lots of Roma Muslim groups that are not in the Balkans. Also this source says that are some "Xoraxane Roma (Turkish Gypsies) who are Christians" https://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/uploads/c725b3ff-6f43-4a34-b66d-93f282b49963/romaed2_2001_0.pdf So it seems that not all who have been labeled as Xoraxane at some point are all Muslim. The different sources are very contradictory on who exactly falls into the Xoraxane category.--QazyQazyQazaqstan (talk) 16:56, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
