Merger proposal
There seems to be much overlap between this article and Mlada (Rimsky-Korsakov). Should they be merged? BW95 (talk) 07:15, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

"The score of the 'Glorification of Chornobog' is no longer extant."
Which would be sad, if not for Rimsky-Korsakov's 23 May 1880 letter to Stasov:
[Musorgsky] has written, it seems, the fifth (I think) scene of Khovanshchina where Golitsïn is taken into exile. He says also that he has almost finished the Interlude (the scene on the Bare Mountain, or the Parubok's dream) in Sorochintsy up to the pedal on C sharp (the bell); however, when I asked to see the music, it turned out that all this was old, left over from Mlada, and, except for two or three pages, not even copied out afresh. He is thinking of spending the summer in the Japanese's [Leonova's] home at Oranienbaum, but the Japanese is going off elsewhere.
The translation is David Brown's; the bolding is mine. This seems to indicate clearly that the score of the Glorification of Chornobog is the same manuscript as that of the Dream Vision of the Peasant Lad, and that Musorgsky simply entered his few changes into the pre-existing autograph (to the ending, which would be necessary to incorporate the theme from the Parubok's dumka in C-sharp Phrygian and Mixolydian). The summer at Oranienbaum would be where Musorgsky would do his final work on Khovanshchina, finishing Acts III and IV and making some progress in Act V. (He appears to have treated Act II as finished, and indeed as it stands it conforms to his initial plan for its ending quite well – but with a single D2 instead of a chord.)
