Fair use rationale for Image:Merck Index Book Cover.gif

Image:Merck Index Book Cover.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 22:19, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

External Reference Corrections

The External References Identified as 'Merck Index', in actuality forward to Fee based Search Engines. I would (IMHO) NOT consider this a valid reference to the 'Merck Index', since it is not acessable publicly, however , I would not object if it was corrected to read 'an fee-based online reference provided by...' as part of the reference. Computer-based typographic composition

The first edition of the Merck Index that was electronically composed was the Ninth, published in 1976. Desktop publishing did not yet exist so the needed composition system was created by a department in Merck. All monographs were converted to digital form (keyboard entry) using software on an Imlac terminal. These were ultimately converted to magnetic tape form and the typographic composition done using an RCA-designed system. Entire pages were composed, including page numbers and headers. Blank spaces were left for the manual insertion of artwork. The main index of the volume was created in-house using a CDC 6400 computer. 184.60.39.183 (talk) 14:29, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. I fail to find evidence that it fulfills the requirements on WP:THE. The "The" is really not being used for disambiguation purposes, and the "the" appears to not always be used and capitalized in running text.[1][2][3][4][5] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zzyzx11 (talkcontribs) 04:05, 5 March 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]
    • Your first, fourth and fifth links refer to the 14th edition of the superseded printed "Merck Index", not the online "The Merck Index" as it is now known. The definitive article is used consistently on the official website. WP:THE states "The definite... article is sometimes included in the official title of... publications... In this case, the article should be included in the name of the corresponding Wikipedia page as well.". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:18, 11 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
