If this article is expanded we must make clear that the present statements are sourced only to the "Inside stories" book....-as none of the other books I have read about Tobianski mention things like him being "known cohort of several British soldiers, and his frequent drinking bouts with them, and the fact that his wealth was far greater than his means," etc. The book (AFAIK) that tell in most detail about this affair is Shabtai Teveth: "Ben-Gurion´s spy." I deleted this: "Tobianski was a known cohort of several British soldiers, and his frequent drinking bouts with them, and the fact that his wealth was far greater than his means, suggested to Be'eri that he was the spy responsible for giving away Israeli arms production positions to possibly hostile nations, most notably British.<ref name="NB">Nachman Ben-Yehuda (1992) Political Assassinations by Jews: A Rhetorical Device for Justice ISBN 0791411656 pp 263-264.</ref>" The reason being that it does not appear in the given source at all. As far as I can tell, Ben-Yehuda's book contains nothing about drinking bouts or suspicious wealth. Zerotalk 13:54, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well spotted! Could you please check the "Spy fever"-section too, as that one is sourced to the same book? Cheers, Huldra (talk) 06:03, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That part is ok. Zerotalk 07:04, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vera Ducas

This was my first effort at starting an article. It was speedy deleted.

VERA DUCAS 1912-1948

Born to 'a good' Jewish Family in Austria-Hungary/Czechoslovakia, Vera Ducas fled the Nazi invasion with husband and child. They lived in Turkey for several years before arriving in Palestine. Eva didn't speak Hebrew and was unable to find work. She is alledged to have become an informer for the British CID. (Harry Levin, 'Jerusalem Embattled', Cassel, London, 1997. ISBN 0 304 33765, text copyright 1950, p.191)

According to The Scotsman on Sunday 29th March 1948 she was 'kidnapped from one of the main cafes of Jerusalem's Jewish Quarter' and her body found on a patch of waste ground, shot through the head. Their correspondent reported that the Stern Gang had announced that they had killed her, accusing her of spying for the British. (Eric Downton,The Scotsman, Monday 30th March, 1948. Levin's diary p.191, 21st May, refers to seeing old posters in Jerusalem announcing her (Eva Dukas) execution, these he attributes to Etzel, (Irgun).)

Haya Tubiansky

18 November 1948

Mister prime minister,

I, Haya (Lena) Tubiansky, widow of the officer and engineer Meir Tubiansky, take the liberty of addressing this request to your honor, in the hope that you will give it sympathetic study . . . On Monday July 7, I learned of strange rumors circulating in the city that my husband had been arrested in Tel Aviv . . . Days passed and I received no news. . . . Then came the heavy blow - the press report about Tubiansky “the traitor” . . . and I, his wife, am the wife of a “traitor,” and his only son Ya’akov, is a “traitor’s” son . . . Initially I did not know how I was to go out and show myself to our numerous acquaintances; principally, I did not know how to explain the fact to my only son, who adulated his father, and whose father loved him as himself. Afterwards, I set my life’s course. I told my son the facts, promising to do everything to uncover the truth and [seek] justice. As for myself: despite my age, I enlisted in the army (under the name of Bentov) so as to resume, with my feeble strength, his service. I declare to your honor, by my solemn word, my utter certainty that my husband was innocent. It is unthinkable that he was a traitor, and do not believe was guilty of the terrible allegations made against him.

. . . I have yet to receive any formal official notification about the circumstances of his death . . . I have received no death certificate, and have not been informed of his place of burial . . . I have not received my husband’s personal effects, nor been informed whether he left a will, letter or not for me or for his son. No official authority has notified me whether, where or how a trial was held, whether the verdict was issued, what that verdict was, and in what manner he was put to death.

. . . I fail to understand why I was told nothing regarding the trial, or at the very least, about the verdict issued against him, so that I could see him before his death. After all, the worst criminals is granted a final request . . . I am convinced your honor will agree there was something untoward here, and my husband’s blood cries out from the earth over the injustice visited upon him. Accordingly, I venture to approach your honor with the request that you examine the matter yourself . . .

In addition to the above, I request your honor to issue instructions that formal notice of his death be conveyed to me, with a death certificate, so as to enable me to settle his civil affairs. In addition, I request notification as to his place of burial so that I can at least lay flowers of commemoration and shed tears over his grave. In addition, I request you issue instructions for the restoration to me of his personal effects which were with him at the time of his death; also to notify me whether he left a will or letter for me.

. . . And finally, with regard my son: who will provide for him now? I will continue my service with the army until the war’s end, and then I will find employment - but what will become of my son?

I look forward to your honor’s reply, and hope you will not let me down . . . With my deepest respects,

Lena (Haya) Tubiansky (Bentov)
