Hello all, My name is Michael Good. I'm starting out on Wikipedia here for a class I'm taking this semester on the history of medicine. I'm interested in expanding this page. Specifically I'd like to expound more upon describing his beliefs and the ways in which he went about expressing them. I have a source from the library where I go to school that is transcripts of some of his talks which I think will be most valuable for this topic. Mgood13 (talk) 05:03, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Michael, nice job! Here are some comments: I think the third sentence in the lead section is very confusing. Maybe reword this? For the hygiene section, maybe if you expanded on the health conditions in Munich at the time, it would be easier to see what impact Pettenkofer's work had. How rigorous was the "minimal amount of rigorous research", and where was it done (if it exists at all)? What did people think of hygiene before him? On the structure, more subsection markers would make the long text easier to navigate. That way you can segment the hygiene stuff into his theory, his work, his successes/accolades, his opponents, etc. Azhu8 (talk) 16:39, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the input! I know there was definitely information available about the prevailing health conditions, I will just need to find them in the sources. I am unsure about the views of hygiene before him, but I agree that it is likely a good idea to consider both where he was coming from and the extent to which his ideas were new in the theories of the time. Nice article! It definitely helped me out on a certain exam. Maybe if you can expand on the life portion, it seems kind of short. Also maybe break the career as a hygenist up a little. It's a big block of text. Maybe talk break it in to some of his specific accomplishments. Lethalbehemoth (talk) 09:11, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the input. I will definitely be revising the hygiene section to make it less overwhelming. I know the sources I used were lacking in the area of his life (they focused on his scientific work more) but I think there will be more information available since I heard he was strongly inclined to hold onto all of the things that he wrote during his life. Maybe I will be able to find those. Mgood13 (talk) 00:10, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Career as a Hygienist

Hey, I think you did a very nice job in this section of laying out the various pieces of his career and making them all cohesive, giving the reader a really nice overhead view of what Pettenkofer did. But I think that you didn't go into nearly as much detail as you could have, especially in the context of other theories of hygiene at the time. Pettenkofer's ideas conflicted with other prevailing theories and the way that he carried them out in the context of Munich is important for understanding who he was and I think you missed some of that. Thanks for your help! I think this follows along with a suggestion above about expanding it in light of the then-current beliefs of the time. Do you have any suggestions as to where might be the best place to put that section? Or what theories to focus upon? Mgood13 (talk) 00:10, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
