Marcus or Manius? What was the most likely praenomen?
Unfortunately Livy does not give us the praenomen for this consul of 263 BCE, simply recording him as M. Valerius Maximus Messalla. In The Fall of Carthage, Adrian Goldsworthy refers to him as Marcus Valerius Maximus Messalla. This article calls him Manius. Is there anything in the Roman historical record which justifies this?
