Page overhall

Hello all - as promised, I have re-written this article from scratch and ensured it is fully referenced - mostly from contemporary newspaper articles, with help from boat enthusiast websites online. I've added a history of the boat's construction and owners, an overview of what happened during the sinking and recovery, a bit of information about people who were aboard the ship to humanise the entry, and left a couple of open questions where I couldn't get a clear source between conflicting reports.

I've also adjusted the section on diving to include sources, and reflect a balanced perspective on history of recreational diving at the wreck.

As such, I have removed the stub class rating, in hope that it will be re-rated by the above projects. Ninquelosse (talk) 15:59, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Date of Sinking

Hi everyone - the date of sinking listed here, and in many secondary sources, seems to be incorrect. I'm working on a major page overhall but prioritised this as it seemed urgent.

The original page read midnight on 17th December 1991; but based on the details in this [1] news source, as well as looking at a 1991 calendar for Egypt, the date of the sinking must be Saturday 14th December.

Some sources give the 15th of December instead (including another section of this wiki page). The ship ran aground at approx 11:13pm on the 14th, and infamously, went down extremely quickly. I don't know whether that qualifies as the 14th or the 15th, because the crisis for the survivors in the water continued over midnight into the morning of the next day. But it definitely wasn't the 17th, as that was the date of the L.A. Times article - which was a couple of days afterwards. Lloyds Maritime official report gives the date as the 15th.

To muddy the waters, a BBC article gives the 16th but I think that's less accurate than the L.A. Times article. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4678192.stm)

Bit horrified that this error has been allowed to stand for as long as it has. Anyway, added to the talk page for accountability & ongoing discussion.

Cleanup

Article should be rewritten from an impersonal point of view, and there should be more on the ship and sinking and less on the diving experience. Drutt (talk) 23:59, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Drutt - absolutely agree, and am working on a major update now Ninquelosse (talk) 23:31, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
