Missing Bougainvillea Bonsai

Title is a misnomer

This title of this page "List of bonsai species" is a misnomer that perpetuates a myth. There are no such thing as "bonsai species" just as there are no "bonsai seeds. " Rather, bonsai is a technique that can be applied to any tree, shrub, or woody plant. A more correct title would be Plants commonly grown as bonsai since the list incorporates some genera as well as species.

I must admit that I'm surprised that my Acer campestre is on this page, but I'm not going to complain :) Anyway, there's a new shot of the bonsai available at http://flickr.com/photos/ujh/2735265456/ . New title Idea

That might be a good idea. I'm starting to think, though, that the list would be better off and more managable if were organized by genus, since for many genera (e.g., Juniperus) virtually any species can be and is used in bonsai, and often there aren't clearly defined species for the varieties most commonly used for bonsai.
