Merger

Okay, third time's the charm. This is a good target I think to merge the list from the main Connecticut article into. However I think a more descriptive title for this list would be "List of municipalities of Connecticut by Population"- That article currently redirects to this one (Thank you Polaron!) and I think the two might be better switched.--Elipongo ^{(Talk|contribs)} 04:32, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is one minor issue with using the term "municipality" in this list. Boroughs are treated as municipalities by the General Statutes. Including them in the list leads to double counting. An explanatory paragraph desirable?

Connecticut has 169 towns, which serve as the fundamental local political subdivision of the state; the entire state is divided into towns.^[1] Connecticut shares a local form of government with the rest of New England called the New England town. There are also 21 cities,^[1] most of which are coterminous with their namesake towns and have a merged city-town government. There are two exceptions: City of Groton, which is a subsection of the Town of Groton and the City of Winsted in the Town of Winchester. There are also nine incorporated boroughs which may provide additional services to a section of town.^[1]^[2] One, Naugatuck, is a consolidated town and borough.

Oh certainly. What with the pictures and all, this is already going to be an article/list hybrid. The case of Winsted is sort of unusual in that the borough of Winsted and town of Winchester were consolidated (as a town) before Winsted was named as a city. So, there was no separate Winsted city government when it became a city (the town officials are the city officials). So while a city of Winsted exists legally, it is administered by the town of Winchester. This is unlike the case of Groton city vs Groton town where there are separate elected officials and an autonomous city government. Anyway, my concern is whether or not Winsted should be listed here. It is classified as a CDP by the Census Bureau (not as a city) so intercensal annual population estimates are not available. --Polaron | Talk 14:58, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would say that this list should be for places chartered somehow by the General Assembly regardless of how they're administered locally or whether they are CDPs. Oddball cases should be explained parenthetically.--Elipongo ^{(Talk|contribs)} 17:03, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent work there. I think it's pretty much good to go. It would be useful, though, to mention which towns are also cities just so people not familiar with the Connecticut municipal structure aren't surprised when they see that Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford are just towns. --Polaron | Talk 05:02, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
