Epinecrophylla haematonota split

On 27 October 2015 the SACC accepted Proposal 589A, the split of Epinecrophylla haematonota (stipple-throated antwren) into E. haematonota, E. amazonica, and E. pyrrhonota. Proposal 589B, to also split E. dentei from the complex, was not accepted. Concurrently Proposal 590, to relegate the existing E. fjeldsaai to be a subspecies of E. haematonota was rejected. However, the split has not been implemented because Proposal 696X, which assigns English names to the four species, has not completed the voting process. See http://www.museum.lsu.edu/~Remsen/SACCproproster.htm for the details of all of these proposals.

Clements has implemented the split and assigned English names. However, those names are not the leading contenders in the SACC proposal, which offers two possible slates, and they stand a good chance of changing after the SACC finishes voting.

Donegan has also not implemented the split.

Therefore it is premature to apply the split of E. haematonata (Clements "rufous-backed", SACC's and Donegan's "stipple-throated" antwren) on pages which use the official SACC list or Donegan's Colombia list as their source.

July 26, 2020 revisions

@MelCassidy92: Your edits of July 26 necessitate changes to the list itself. Your new reference contains changes since the previous year's edition of that publication but not a full list of species. Are you going to update the list in this article? If not, I'm going to return it to the earlier version that cited full lists so the text and the list match. Craigthebirder (talk) 19:08, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Craigthebirder: Thank you for reminding me. I will get on this and update the list. MelCassidy92 (talk) 21:34, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MelCassidy92: What will you use as the source? The newest update you cited won't be enough. Whatever the source, you'll need to note all of the deviations from SACC taxonomy - I'm sure Donegan has splits that SACC doesn't recognize. Or may I suggest this: Go back to the previous version and add something like this to the text "A 2020 paper contains new information that has not been assessed by the SACC." Craigthebirder (talk) 21:46, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Craigthebirder: The annual checklist updates are published in a journal called "Conservation Colombiana" as PDFs and the most recent full list I found was published 17 April 2015. I bought a copy on Amazon several years ago. Is that acceptable as my baseline and then update with the annual publications? MelCassidy92 (talk) 21:57, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MelCassidy92: If this (Donegan, Thomas, Juan Carlos Verhelst, Paul Salaman, Oswaldo Cortes, David Caro, and Alonso Quevedo. Checklist of the Birds of Colombia 2015 https://www.researchgate.net/publication/308015655_Checklist_of_the_Birds_of_Colombia_2015_-_with_footnotes_to_all_differing_taxonomic_treatments_of_IOC_AOU-SACC_and_BirdLifeHBW2014_and_all_ProAves_papers_on_occurrencestatus_Listado_de_Aves_de_Colombia) is the 2015 source you're talking about, it was already included as a source that supplemented the SACC list. If so, I suggest you go back to the previous text and list as a starting point, add something like "A series of papers since 2015 have expanded on the SACC and 2015 Donegan lists." Then cite each year's update with a unique ref name, and add in any additional species with a "ref name=___" citation. Then say "The combined lists contain ____ species, of which ___ are endemic...etc." That should get the same result as starting fresh, with a lot less work. I'll take care of updating the taxonomy - the SACC today released a new version. Nothing major, but several small changes affect Colombia. Craigthebirder (talk) 22:40, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Craigthebirder: Given that Colombian territory is not just South America (so beyond SACC) and given that material from Colombia dates back almost two decades, it makes sense to use that as the primary source. I do not see other checklists with citations for updates (e.g. List_of_birds_of_the_United_States). Thank you for the checklist for 2016. MelCassidy92 (talk) 22:04, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MelCassidy92: For lists with a base source and updates, here are a few of the many: List of birds of Kentucky, List of birds of British Columbia, List of birds of Cuba, and List of birds of Metropolitan France. I'm not sure what you mean by "dates back almost two decades". But if you want to start from scratch, have at it. Just be sure to use one of the major taxonomies, though I think you should stick to SACC's for consistency with all the other SA lists. You can download it here: https://www.museum.lsu.edu/~Remsen/SACCBaseline.htm Craigthebirder (talk)

@Craigthebirder: The links are very helpful. I have not done a list before so learning this the hard way so grateful for your assistance. A question for you: for taxonomic decisions accepted and published by the "HBW/BirdLife International Taxonomic Working Group", but yet to be not considered or brought to the attention of SACC (I believe proposals are voluntary), can I denote those species with the symbol "†" and detail that in the introduction? Or should I exclude those species? MelCassidy92 (talk) 19:44, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MelCassidy92: I'd not include them - too many cooks...The current SACC list for the mainland plus 2015 Donegan for San Andres and Providencia plus whatever the annual Donegans have that aren't in the other two should be enough. (And the Lincoln's sparrow entry from Cotinga, if one of the annual Donegans doesn't also have it.) List of birds of Kentucky has three sources; see it for how I addressed them in the text and the list itself. Craigthebirder (talk) 21:25, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MelCassidy92: Agreed - too many cooks - I will follow your recommendation. Thank you again. Craigthebirder (talk) 21:44, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
