Canadian Science Publishing

I work for a publisher of science journals (Canadian Science Publishing) and have a few journals whose preprint policy would allow authors to post a preprint (for example a poster presentation) of a submitted paper. I am including my involvement with the publisher here as a conflict of interest disclosure. the following is an example of one of the journals' policies:

Authors may place a draft of a submitted article on their Web site or their organization’s server, provided that the draft is not amended once accepted for publication. We encourage authors to insert hyperlinks from preprints to the final published version on the NRC Research Press Web site (http://www.nrcresearchpress.com). Abstracts or extended abstracts related to conferences do not constitute prior publication. Extended abstracts are usually under 800 words and do not include presentation of detailed tables and graphics of the results of the study.

Thank you so much for your involvement and interest in preprint polices. I feel obliged to point out that the text of your journal’s policy, as it is currently written would be classified as “Likely Incompatible / Unclear.”

This page is about journal’s polices towards sharing of manuscripts prior to publication. One of the main focuses on this page is whether posting a manuscript to a preprint server such as arXiv or bioRxiv would render a manuscript ineligible for publication at that journal.

Your journal’s policy states: "Authors may place a draft of a submitted article on their Web site or their organization’s server, provided that the draft is not amended once accepted for publication.”

This policy, as written, would be incompatible with having authors first post to arXiv or bioRxiv because a) for most authors arXiv or bioRxiv are not part of the author’s own website nor their organizations server. And b) even for authors that did happen to work at the same organization as arXiv or bioRxiv (Cornell and CSHL, respectively) the language in your policy suggests that they could only post “submitted” manuscripts to a pre-print server, which would seem to rule out an author’s ability to first post to a pre-print server and then submit to your journal.

If this is not the intent of your policy, perhaps you can change it! The table on this page has lots of examples of language that is very clear about compatibility with posting to preprint servers. For example, Nature’s policy states: “Neither conference presentations nor posting on recognized preprint servers constitute prior publication” and PeerJ’s is exceptionally clear: "PeerJ accepts submissions which have previously appeared on preprint servers (including PeerJ PrePrints and arXiv); have previously been presented at conferences; or have previously appeared in other ‘non journal’ venues (for example: blogs or posters)."

I am adding your journals and marking them as "Likely Incompatible / Unclear.” Please let us know if your journal’s policy updates and someone can reclassify it!

Purpose of this list

I wonder what the point of this list is: isn't it redundant with SHERPA/RoMEO, which provides a very detailed analysis of these policies? If we want to curate our own list, what about hosting it on Wikidata instead? Sorry if I missed something, I am new to this kind of lists on Wikipedia. − Pintoch (talk) 18:44, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Unified versus "Per Journal"?

Hi all, I'm a bit confused. The header "Publishers with unified policies" suggests to me that the publisher has one policy that applies to all journals. But then I see a row about the American Chemical Society that does not have a unified policy, but one that differs from journal to journal. What is unified about that? Social science journals

There doesn't seem to be an evaluation of social science journals in this list.

Indeed. It is borderline ludicrous and bizarre that the policies of academic journals in the social sciences and humanities are not included in this list. If someone is able to come up with a credible justification for this (still ongoing) exclusion, I'd love to hear it. Ksamjg (talk) 22:30, 20 November 2018 (UTC) ksamjg

Compatible with what?

This page uses the terms "compatible" and "incompatible", without first defining with what they are (in)compatible. Can some clarify, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:06, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

"compatible" means the journal will accept submissions which have already been posted to preprint servers. "incompatible" means it won't Point of Presencetalk 14:36, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

In that case, can we only list of the journals which are compatible (means which accept submissions which have already been posted to preprint servers)? Because, when the preprint servers are growing and when we are advocating for preprints, people are looking for a curated list to see the journals which all accept the preprints.
