Neologism Concern

The article was prodded earlier today as a possible neologism. It appears to be a neologism that has gained traction. The term is being used in the United States in public plicy discourse and Census Bureau reporting. I quickly saw examples from the Federal Goverment and at least five states. Several of the ones I looked at (dating back to 1997) described it as a recently coined turn. (The phenomenon is older than the U.S.) But I haven't found one yet that says who coined it or when. 74.116.154.204 (talk) 18:23, 13 December 2011 (UTC) this page should be strongly referenced with foster children. there are many study results done which indicate detrimental health for grandparents raising grandchildren. There are no bucolic farms with happy people and animals. there are people who work and have yet another responsibility added. there is no society acceptance for grandparents who-short of death-choose not to raise their grandchildren.

This is a very important issue. There are estimated to be 300,000 children being raised in this type of arrangement in the UK (Source: grandparentsplus.org.uk). This is more than 4 times the number in formal foster placements. In England the phenomenon is often known as "kinship care" but the official UK Department of Education Guidelines refer to "Family and Friends Care". In Scotland, Northern Ireland and as far as I am aware USA, Australia and New Zealand it is known as "kinship care". I would therefore suggest that there should be a new wikipedia entry on Kinship care. A google search of the phrase "kinship care" nets 403,000 results whereas "grandfamily" only gives 35,100 results and "family and friends care"77,200" results.--3sheds (talk) 10:30, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Note: as the article is currently very short, there is no real need of section headers (in my opinion). Globalise tag

I've added the globalise tag to this article because, as pointed out above, the term is used primarily in the U.S. but the concept is universal. For a start, see this Australian news story. Making this article truly globalised would probably require access to journal articles about this type of family arrangement. Graham87 04:23, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Lead section revisions

This statement in the lead section cites the American Community Survey but I am able to not verify these numbers on that site and they conflict with other sources I have. I will rephrase this paragraph and cite verifiable sources. "There are currently 6,660,064 children in the United States who are living in grandfamilies.[1] Over 2.5 million grandparents living with their grandchildren are primarily responsible for the care of these children.[1]" Benutzer41 (talk) 20:26, 9 November 2013 (UTC).

I also removed these sentences with unverifiable sources, I am working on finding verifiable and more recent sources. "Over 2.5 million grandparents living with their grandchildren are primarily responsible for the care of these children.. Between 2000 and 2005, the number of children raised by relatives in the U.S. has increased by more than 222,000, and nearly 480,000 grandparents nationally are raising children below the federal poverty level. Each fact referenced in this article is appropriate and have reliable references. Each reference is from legitimate organizations throughout the United States. I feel that some of the information given on this article page may be outdated, due to the fact that it was last modified in 2014. Since some if not most of the information comes from the U.S Census, then there is not a problem with the information being outdated due to the fact that the most recent Census, has not be created yet. I do believe that there is information missing in this article. The article goes over the major aspects of kinship, more on the financial side of the care. I feel that there should be more information added such as how it effects the child being raised by their grandparents and also the numbers provided on this article seem to be a little broad.--Klc95230 (talk) 20:34, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

Possible Edits

The current article is incredibly well-researched and informative, however, it is very focused on kinship care in the US. The article could be stronger if it covered kinship care throughout the world.
