bikez.com

Bikez.com was discussed by WikiProject Motorcycling back in January 2011. The content consists of copy-pastes of manufacturer press releleases, combined with user-generated content. See WP:USERGENERATED. Bikez.com says "Bikez.com holds no responsibilities for the correctness or authenticity of information, pictures and other material found at Bikez.com". It says they collect whatever people give them. They do not test motorcycles. They did not remove the engine from a ZX-12R and dyno test the horsepower at the front sprocket. On the other hand, Motorcycle Consumer News actually took a real bike and tested it with a dyno and a radar gun. This is a thing on the internet

http://www.dragbike.com/news/07-00/071200i.htm It claims the bike was not restricted, but gives no explanation as to why.

It isn't clear exactly what Dragbike.com is. It appears to contain a fan forums, and a lot of advertising. It has articles written by product vendors and enthusiasts. The article above is unsigned. Who wrote it? What is the explanation for the contradiction with every other published source? Is it some kind of grand international conspiracy to hide the truth? Why? Usually conspiracies have a reason.

Dry weight of 210 kg

The manufacturer's claim of 210 kg (460 lb) is so far out of the realm of possibility that I don't think we should mention it at all. Both Motorcycle Consumer News and Cycle World agree the wet weight is 247 kg (545 lb). Even if we are willing to believe the claimed wet weight is 541 lb (245 kg), this 210 kg dry weight sounds like a fantasy. The items removed for dry weight add up as follows: 

  8.1   battery Yuasa YTX14H-BS
 33.1   5.3 US gallons fuel @ 6.25 lbs 
  7.9   3.8 US QT oil at 1.84 lbs
=49.1 lbs total

So if you start with this dry weight... 

 460.0 lbs
 +49.1 lbs
=509.1

That puts you 39.1 lbs short of the claimed wet weight, and 35.9 lbs less than the tested wet weight by two different sources. Where's all the extra weight? It's well known that manufacturers will fudge their numbers, and when they do we should ignore them, unless third party sources have drawn attention to these "errors" and lies.

Is there any reason to believe 460 lbs is even close to the correct dry weight? Is there 40 pounds of oil in the forks? Did they weigh it with no tires? --Dennis Bratland (talk) 02:06, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dry weight is actually 463 not 460 210 kg is 463 google it, that is the manufactures stated dry weight. That is no gas at 5.3 gallons which 35 pound, fuel is 6 pound when it is cold and 7 pound when warm above 60 degrees. I am sure you are aware that fuel expands when warm. Then the battery is 15 lb., battery is way more that 8 pound 15 if not more I have held it in hand and have seen listings of 6.5 kg. Coolant is almost ten pounds see where this is going and oil, fork fluid, brake fluid, tool kit. All that add to the wet weight 0f 541 lb. which is also stated in the manufactures service manual. And these number have been stated in cycle world back issues. I have read them online, you can access these if you pay for extra from the magazine which is all I curently subscribe to. So in total we have 541 minus 463 = 78 pound in total. There is 35 of that in gas leaves 43 pounds, of that you have 8 pounds of coolant leaves 35, 4 quarts of oil is 8 pounds leaves 27 pounds, battery is at least 15 pounds if not more leaves 12 pounds for fork oil, brake fluid, tool kit. I think that adds up pretty close don't you think. I don't know everything but after 25 years riding and wrenching on motorcycles I know a few. Thanks for the discussion on the zx12r it has been a great bike! Unit ordering

It's strange that something as basic as unit conversion ordering has become a reason to fight. In the conventions of the Automobile Project WP:AUN and the Motorcycling Project WP:MCNUM the practice of placing the units of the bike's major market (which is almost always country of origin) is pretty uncontroversial. It's nothing more than a derivation of the WP:MOS convention WP:UNITS. I've never seen any evidence that the ZX-12R is a USA-only bike, or that the US is somehow a more significant market than Europe or Asia. Maybe the US sales numbers are a bit higher than other countries (maybe) but even then, are we going to make Triumphs and BSAs and Ducatis primarily inches and pounds because they sell more of them in the US? It just seems odd to have to even bicker of something so obvious. Pretty much Harley and Indian, plus some very old marques, use US customary units. Everything else is SI units.
