I'm not much of a wikipedia editor but I've come across some information from a book. Herbs & Natural Supplements: An Evidence-based Guide (Second Edition). © 2007 Elsevier Australia. All of the information here comes from two of the studies cited by the book.

D,L- kavain has an effect on the amygdalar complex that appears to promote sleep, compared to placebo (holm 1991). EEG studies have demonstrated that D,L- kavain induces a dose-dependent increase in delta, theta, and alpha-1 brainwaves but a decrease in alpha-2, and beta brainwaves (frey 1991).
