Reliability?
I thought John the Armenian was one of the commanders in Battle of Tricamarum and died shortly after that in 533 or 534 because of hunting accident. (see: The Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire: A. D. 527-641, page 635–636 and Ian Hughes: Belisarius: The last Roman general ISBN 978-1-59416-085-1, page 259) Or is this article about different person? The article says that he was killed in ambush near Ravenna in 535, but I thought there was no Byzantine troops in Italy in 535 as Belisarius invaded in 536? --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 11:34, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
- The article is indeed problematic: first, there were several people named John that acted as commanders in Belisarius' wars. I checked the PLRE vols 2 and 3, but was not able to find a person of this name who participated both in Nika and in the campaigns and who died at Ravenna. Given that the article is based on an early 19th-century work, this "John the Armenian" is most probably a mix of various people. I would suggest bringing this up for deletion. - I have found a couple of references that corroborates the first couple of sentences in the article. I have also added a relevant "See also". I suggest that there is enough background on "John the Armenian" General who served Belisarius to keep the article. Although more references need to be added to corroborate all the content. - I cleaned up, thanks to Nipson's provision of Procopius for sourcing: this was one of Belisarius' aides who was killed in Africa in 533, Ioannes 14 in the PLRE III. The rest is probably as I suspected, confusion with other Johns. Constantine ✍ 15:11, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
