I can't find where to edit this but I wanted to add that he started his career as barrister, serving in 1845 as junior counsel in the Ballinhassig Massacre coroner's inquest. You can find him frequently mentioned in the Cork Examiner and the Southern Reporter/Cork Commercial Courier. In the Southern Reporter of 15 July 1845, on page 3, in the closing arguments he starts out by admitting this was his first "case of magnitude."
