IF he was born in Silesia, why should we call him a Polish scientist? Silesia was part of Austria at that time, his names sounds not realy Polish, he was a Lutheran, he wrote in Latin, French and German - so why should he be called Polish?? According to this source he was born in/near Rawicz in the Kingdom of Poland, and that's the only reason to call him a Polish scientist.Pommerland (talk) 07:21, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When I wrote the article last year the only significant information online about the pre-Leiden Bachstrom was in Rose's "New General Biographical Dictionary" from 1857 [1], which I therefore listed as a source. It's was interesting that the 1857 author only seemed to know about his activities before his arrival in Holland, while most other (tiny) bios only dealt with his life starting in Leiden, and merely sometimes said that he originated from Rawicz. In Rose's bio he is called a native of Silesia, son of a barber, and Rawicz, on the border of Silesia, is not mentioned. Nicolo Martin's bio wasn't yet online (or at least not cached by google ;-). A few things in his text clash with Rose's old effort (e.g. his father doesn't seem to be a barber anymore, he studied in Jena instead of Halle, etc.) and I have to assume, with the better access to material, that the modern author knows best. I reverted your initial edits, because it appeared rash and only based on the observation that Rawicz wasn't quite in Silesia. Always better to add a reference. Feel free to improve the article based on Martin's text; there is for example a nice explanation why the Jesuits found it necessary to imprison and execute him (in 1720 he apparently planned to break free the Jesuits' prisoners on death-row; he had guts). Do consider though that if you change him from a Silesian to a Polish German or German Pole, Bachstrom may get Copernicated ;-) Afasmit (talk) 13:24, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
