Myths about Jesus Colon by Olimpia Colon

Jesus Colón was my uncle. The person in the photograph is not him it is his brother Joaquin Colon who was my father. The family was not poor they had a Hotel in Cayey when the USA army came to Cayey. A description of the living quarter (which was not where this article states) can be found in Joaquin Colon’s memoirs, “ Pioneros puertorriqueños en Nueva York 1917-1948” in the preface, in his own handwriting the description was donated to CUNY with the photo his copy of the manuscript. The photo can be verified in the photo album “Images of America Pioneros Puerto Ricans in New York City 1896-1948” published by CUNY - Félix V. Matos-Rodríguez and Pedro Juan Hernández. I do not think that Edna Acosta-Belen, professor of Latin American an Caribbean Studies at the University of Albany, NY did her homework well. These look like statements from some of Jesus Colon’s writing which are not biographical correct information. In the above booklet of images of CUNY one can see Jesus Colon’s ID card as a worker on the ship that he was aboard from PR to NY. On the Ellis Island passengers list he appears as an employee, as a waiter. She probably assumed this information from a short story of Jesus Colon a Puerto Rican in New York where in A STORY he wrote as the first person about arriving to NY as a stoway. I will soon write a book about all these myths with facts, but I know these pages get to more people and I hope things can be cleared up with facts. My name is Olimpia Colon. PS March 30, 2006 I forgot to make two more corrections; his ashes were scattered in the River La Plata, parting from Cayey, the River goes to the north of Puerto Rico and into the Atlantic ocean. It is against the law to scatter ashes over a town, and he stated his wish in his Will or testament. Second, if he was from such a poor family, how come when the USA military came to Cayey, PR one of the three pianos was at the Colon Hotel, since Olimpia Colon Jesus’ sister was a piano teacher. She also studied at the UPR when they moved to Old San Juan, and they also had a Colon Hotel, all this before going to NY where his older brother Joaquin Colon was waiting for him. In New York both Colon brothers had very bad jobs and housing accommodations this is part of both of their books. But because of their upbringing they knew English, had good calligraphy, and went into good jobs. This is a fact written in Joaquin Colon’s book. There is a photo in both books, where both brothers are together very well dressed in 1917, which is not a poor family attire. I do not deny that they had bad living quarters or very bad and disgusting jobs when they arrived at NY, but their goal was to bring their family from PR to NY and on the Ellis Island ship records one can see where they went to live. There is a lot to be corrected on this story, those who write about Jesus Colon should go to CUNY and get the story right.
