Disambiguation Manual of Style changes

I made fairly major changes in this area. I know little about the topic, so I might have missed some nuances, but I hope these can be corrected by others. My main purpose was to make it a better disambiguation page. I dropped South Asia as it was unclear whether someone would enter "India" as a search when heading for this. I reverted to 7 January, which already didn't have the h2 sections. The division "geography" vs. "other" isn't an improvement, since the East Indies are also a geographical term, just without direct relation to India itself. Also, the primary meaning should come first, which is simply "region of the Indus river". We absolutely have to list "South Asia", since that's pretty much a PC term for "Indian subcontinent", only doesn't hurt Pakistani feelings by calling them a part of India. dab (𒁳) 16:29, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I suspected I would wander into cultural issues and I don't care to get involved with those. But please consider starting with what I changed it to, as there were other changes that make the page useful for an outsider less engaged with the issues to find the articles they are looking for quicker, which is what this page is for. The page should only provide enough information to guide the user to the appropriate page. The definition of the word, IMHO, should be on the India page as a wikidict tag. Consider also WP:MOSDAB#Linking_to_a_primary_topic, the reduction of bluelinks and WP:NOT#DICT. (John User:Jwy talk) 17:01, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
yes, the case is, well, complicated. To begin with, there is no agreement on a "primary topic" here; in fact, per Talk:India, there are good reasons why India itself should be the disambiguation page. There can be no informed disambiguation without a brief mention of the term's origin, and to prohibit that on some guideline would be a huge mistake. Of course in depth discussion belongs on Wiktionary, no argument there. As far as I am concerned, this is the "India page", and we just daren't address a move of India to Republic of India because of the repercussions, both practical and emotional. As it is, I can see no superfluous bluelinks except perhaps the Greek and some of the "see also" links. The truly primary meaning of "India" is "pertaining to the Indus river", which for this reason at present is mentioned right at the beginning. dab (𒁳) 17:14, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cautionary paragraph

I have moved the following paragraph from the bottom of the article so it can be discussed here first. It was added by Wiki dr mahmad:

Important:
Due to national pride and sensitivities, South Asian nations now insist that, use of the word "India" should be restricted to describe only the present "Republic of India" and should avoid including its other South Asian neighbours in it. Further, they argue that the Indus valley civilization was shared by present day Republic of India and Pakistan and this fact should always be explicitly stated. In order to be neutral, and in fareness to both sides, the International scholarship is now careful in the correct usage of these 'politically loaded' words.

While I understand its a sensitive word, I don't think this comment belongs on this page. Maybe at the top of this talk page, as a hidden comment on the top of the article or as a section of India. This page should be streamlined for finding what is needed, not the cultural sensitivities of the word. (John User:Jwy talk) 02:30, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It Is Open for Discussion: - Wiki dr mahmad (talk) 19:12, 25 November 2007 (UTC) I will be happy if this point is dicussed here and suitable addition(s)/alterations are made where ever appropriate. After modifications, this may also go in the article "India", as suggested. However, I leave this task to seasoned contributers here; I am too new to enter a debate and will be happy with whatever concensus is reached. Will user:JWY kindly take it up till final stage. I will appreciate and thank him.[reply]

Indium Oxide Synonym

'India' is also an uncommon name for the chemical compound indium oxide, similar to how 'alumina' or 'silica' refer to aluminum oxide or silicon dioxide respectively. As a citation, its usage is noted on Pubchem as a synonym for the compound: https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/Indium-oxide . I am unable to make this addition to the page.
