High Flammability?

The wiki article on petroleum jelly makes a point that it is not very flammable, and will only burn when heated to a liquid state and with a wick material. Is there a source that can be cited that states that Icky-Pick is actually flammable? Bgovern (talk) 21:51, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Animal Based?

Isn't gelatin an animal based product? This article claims the substance is Petroleum based - which is it?

Gelatin is animal-based, but Icky-Pick is not gelatin. It's gelatinous - meaning, it's gooey-wobbly like gelatin is, but it's not actual gelatin. DS (talk) 12:54, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, petrolatum is not at all similar to gelatin. It could be considered "gooey" but it certainly isn't wobbly, the texture is a bit like very soft candle wax. It should also be pointed out that petrolatum, Icky Pic and cable compounds in general are NOT high flammability - they generally have flash points well above 250°C, and virtually all national and international cable design specifications state this as a requirement. ALPETH/CUPETH

The substance is polyethylene wax, normally found in ALPETH/CUPETH cables. The name come from the fact that sorrunding the wires is a heavy corrugated shield of either aluminum (ALPETH) or copper (CUPETH) with polyethylene wax inside to keep moisture out.

Can't be "just" polyethylene wax - polyethylene wax is extremely hard, and would crack when the cable was flexed. That would mean that it would be useless for blocking water ingress. It could be an oil/wax blend with polyethylene wax added to boost up the drop point - but it certainly wouldnt be 100% polyethylene wax. Merge?

Perhaps we should merge this to Cable compound. Any comments?--Srleffler (talk) 05:26, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good to me. I looked for more references for this one and couldn't find any. ☆ Bri (talk) 19:27, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
